Help! Can't hear MP3s!
« on: April 23, 2003, 07:22:23 am »

Hi!
I moved from version 9.0.140 to 9.0.157 and I cant play anymore sound files.
Video files work perfectly (except for occassion crash in Media Core).
I get an error message stating:
"There was an error starting playback.
Make sure that your system has a valid sound playback device and that it is properly configured in playback options.
(Double check the output mode, output device, and output bitdepth)."
I checked my playback options and they're the same as my WinAMP options yet the Winamp works...
(I'm using Direct Sound and Primary Sound Driver).

I even tried changing the playback options to any of the output sources and that didnt help.

Any way to overcome this problem? Maybe re-installing one of the plugins somehow? The output plugin or maybe the mp3 input or something?

That's a big leap from 140 to 157. I'd backup everything...uninstall MC...reboot...reinstall MC...restore your library (but then...your library may be the problem).

10-27

edit: well probably not "the" problem but could be "a" problem, since MC evolved alot from 140 to 159 (though no database changes have been mentioned by JR)

Under Playback Options, where it lists Mode (Direct Sound, Wave Out, etc), click on Settings and try changing the Device to either Primary Sound Driver, or your actual sound card.

No guarantees that will work, but it did for me when I ran into this problem.

Oh... didn't notice that part where you said you did that already... sorry. :P

Yeah, I'd try what xen-uno said.

Reinstalled it several times - no good.

I actually tried a few versions since 140 but none had any success.

I wish I could somehow delete all the relevant DLLs but I don't know where they're hiding. I think that if after installation I will be asked to reboot instead of starting program immediately - things might be working again.

well if you really want to get into it, the .exe is really a compressed file (i forget the format) that you can look at and look at all the install files, and you could then search the hard drive for them and if found delete them (move them might be better)

and you could also remove all the registry entries then reinstall.
