Playing .mp4 files hangs Media Center and Ubuntu Server 18.04 with xfce GUI

As the title says.  MC plays the first couple of seconds of audio and may or may not put up a still from the beginning of the video.  And that's it.  I can't kill it, can't open a terminal to kill it - nothing.
