Question as title.

Playback fails with a "Playback could not be started on the output "Core Audio" using the format "44.1 khz 2ch"

Playback device is set to Default (Core audio) and I have turned off all DSP settings.

I'm going to assume that the APP's send data in another format, or MC does something the APP's don't like.

Nearly every BlueTooth audio device *only* works at 48kHz.  MC is a precision music player.  It plays exactly what you tell it to, at the native rate of the music file.  Unless you tell it otherwise.  MC is trying to play your 44.1kHz files as is and your BlueTooth headphones can't accept it.

You can easily change the DSP Studio to resample everything to 48 kHz instead.  Or just set this option, which will automatically change the sample rate for you:

Tools > Options > Audio > Advanced > auto configure output settings on playback error > YES

Pretty much, though I'm sure there's a way to automatically do it with zones if you don't want to leave the automatic change option enabled.

Is there something I can put inbetween / different BT buds which do 44khz playback if I frequently value convenience over quality for casual listening (aside from cranking up iTunes)?

It's a limitation of Bluetooth and the codec it uses, resampling to 48 kHz is really the best workaround for it. If it works in other media player apps, it's because the media player is very likely resampling in the background without informing you. Like Brian said, MC is a precision player and will try to play it at the native rate of the file but you'll encounter this issue with Bluetooth devices because most of them don't accept 44.1 kHz without resampling to 48 kHz. I can't think of anything you can put in-between because ultimately the 44.1 kHz will have to be resampled to 48 kHz for it to work.

And this is why I personally don't use Bluetooth speakers, in-ear headphones, etc.

Are you playing to something other than the AirPods?  If so, you can set up zones for each and play independently to each.  But you're probably going to tell me that you want to switch between speakers and airpods on the fly and not lose your place in a song or playlist.  That's not quite as easy to do with JRiver.

One way of doing this might be to use the Audio MIDI control panel to make a composite audio device from your normal speakers (or whatever) and the airpods, so they both play all the time.

Or, easiest of all, just change the sampling rate to 48kHz for everything and it will always work with the Airpods.

I've made a bunch of guesses here because you haven't really given us any information about how you use your system.  Good luck.

Yeah - I might just have to do that, and pull all the soundcards from the Macs.

I would otherwise use JRemote running on my iPads, iPods or iPhones through the Airpods but with it being super inconvenient to use, I've taken to connecting the Airpods to the Macs I'm sitting in front of.

Curious why you find JRemote "super inconvenient". In my experience it is very straight forward and with ~5 clicks (including starting JRemote) I can play my favorite playlists from anywhere. I do this even if I sit in front of my Mac because, for some reason, my Mac wont allow me to choose my Sonos Symfonisk via Airplay while all my iOS devices have no issue with that. Some users have reported connection issues with JRemote but I have not experienced this and the issue is being worked on. In any case, to me, JRemote is indispensable.
