Video does not start, mainly for 4K UHD
« on: August 25, 2020, 04:35:16 am »

I almost exclusively play back MKV files ripped from my own, purchased Bluray and 4K UHD disks, using MadVR and ROHQ. Files are stored on local hard drives in my HTPC. The computer is ageing (i7-2600 on a Win10pro computer, JRMark (version 26.0.106 64 bit): 3080), but has never before had problems with blu-ray video playback. A few months back I upgraded the projector (Espon TW-H9400) and video card Nvidia RTX-2070. Now I frequently experience the following:

1. The first frame shows up on the screen, but freezes.
2. Audio plays as normal, while video is stuck at the first frame.
3. MC is non-responsive to mouse click, and the header does not appear on mouse-over
4. When clicking on the screen, MC goes white and a pop-up showing "wait for app to respond" or "close app" appears.
5. I always need to close MC
6. Restart MC, and restart the same movie.
7. Sometimes step 1-6 needs to be run 2, 3, 4 times before successful playback is achieved.
8. If successful, video stutters for a few seconds before smooth playback is achieved. This has been normal in all years of using MadVR.

Without having done any research, there seem to be a correlation between occurrence and which of the 4 hard drives the movie is stored on. Could spin-up time be causing this? Or simply read rate? I do not think it is faulty segments, because the problem is always on starting playback, no problems if video is running.

How to troubleshoot this?

Maybe this is related https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,121221.0.html

I think most of what's in that thread is some other problem, since they seem to discuss stutter during playback. Now, still one of the posts got my attention:
That sounds like something completely different is going on. Like a weak power supply.

How good is your power supply?
New or old? (I've had lower quality supplies deteriorate so much over time that they just couldn't hold the voltages within tolerance, or couldn't supply enough power.)
Platinum quality? (I always go Platinum these days. They last very well. Currently a Seasonic SS-660XP, as per my signature.)
Have you added more drives or other components without an upgrade?

Check your power usage using this site: https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator

This I am going to inverstigate. My PSU is a few years old, and should have the Watts necessary, but still worth looking into.

Use CrystalDiscInfo to check your hdd

Thanks - here is the analysis for the disk with files I had main problems with. Note that all disks have clocked >40k power-on hours, and this is the only disk with UHD movies on, and the "youngest".

What am I looking for?

Sorry ... was a bit busy so didnt check forum

Your hdd look healthy  from CrystalDiskInfo (their icons are blue ... yellow icon warns of possible problem ... red icons warns of possible failure ... Crystal reads SMART daya from HDD)

Reason, i directed to other forum is that there seems to be problem with MadVR and 2000 series NV ... setting some buffer as that thread indicated resolved problem for lots of ppl.

And yes ... spinning up disk from sleep will cause problem with playback ... lots of thread about that

Try not to spin disk down and see if the problem persist
