Album not displaying in Playing Now, but IS displaying in top right

I'm getting a checkerboard instead of album art in Playing Now, but I can see album art next to the search bar. See the attached image. It's been this way for a few days, if not several weeks.

I store album art embedded in files, whether I place it there manually or it comes from Apple or Amazon downloads. I'm seeing this with .m4a, .mp3, and .flac files.

Does anyone know what happened that I can't see the artwork?
