New computer, library issues
« on: November 06, 2020, 03:12:26 pm »

I restored MC on my new computer.  However, it points to /Volumes/music-1, which doesn't exist on the new computer.  It will only allow me to point to /Volumes/music.  I changed one file's pathway to /Volumes/music and it plays fine and acts as normal, but with over 40k songs in my library it would take me forever to retag all of them.  Any suggestions?

You should be able to change where the library points to in Find/Copy/Move (F6). Retagging shouldn't be necessary. I had the same issue once, when I had mounted the "music" volume twice, so the second instance got named music-1. But even if you have to change the path for 22K files it should be done in a few minutes.

I guess I should have mentioned that my "music" folder is on a server that remains unchanged.  I'm going to try a workaround by naming the server's music file as "music-1" - hopefully that will work :-\

Don't do that!

Just use the "Find & Replace" function in the RM&CF function, without Directories or Filename selected, and replace all instances of "music-1" with "music".

Test with a few files. When happy select all files and run that process.

As HaWi says, that is very quick and easy.

Curious as to why I shouldn't do that, Roderick?

I actually did change the server folder to "music-1" and it's working like a beauty w/o using Find & Replace

Oh, just me having an issue with solutions that aren't neat, and fixing things with a workaround instead of using the deep functionality of MC.

Now you have an ugly "/Volumes/music-1" volume instead of a nice neat "/Volumes/music" volume.  ;D

Roderick,
I TOTALLY agree; however, I was jonesing for some tunes.  When I have more time, I'll go back and fix it the way you and HaWi suggested.  THANK YOU both for the help and *proper* way to do it.

Best - JMR

I totally get your sentiment. When I first started out with MC I would have done the exact same thing. I was just a lot more familiar with the OS's file system than I was with MC. However, as I got more acquainted with MC I began to understand and appreciate the power and beauty of it and I learned how to use it. I still don't master 90% of what can do but I am totally in awe of the capabilities it has. And just to be honest, I didn't figure out most of the things myself but rather received amazing support on this forum and I appreciate that very very much.

HaWi, you are so right.  I’ve been trying to convince people that MC is the alpha and omega of all, but, like you, it is a steep learning curve.  But, with your help (and Roderick), not to mention the forum, it gets simple each time a question arises!
