sub par UHD playback

Hello, I've been using JRiver to playback FLAC & MKV files on a PC & Mac for over a decade now. I've recently built a new PC with a Ryzen 7 3700X CPU & a Radeon RX Vega 56 card. It's my goal to be done with Windows 10 & switch to Linux. I've got Win10 & Ubuntu 20.04 running in a dual boot setup. I'm running JRiver 26 on Ubuntu, & 27 on Win10. On Ubuntu, I'm using the generic driver that was installed with the OS installation. Playback looks & plays very well, except playback of 4K UHD material is slightly washed out. This problem was easily solved on Win 10 by enabling RO HQ. That option doesn't exist on JRiver 26 on Ubuntu. Is there a work around for this ? I feel like I'm missing something really simple.

You might try JRiver Media Center 27, as there was some improvements to video and hardware acceleration there for Linux and Mac.

Otherwise, in general video quality won't ever be as good as it is in JRiver Media Center on Windows. Why? Because of Microsoft's DirectShow and filters like madVR, which aren't available (and likely not possible to do) outside of Windows.

The image being washed out is likely because its HDR, which isn't supported on Linux yet. We have some plans to change that, but it'll likely be a while since this is a complex topic.
On Windows we benefit from a ready-to-use ecosystem of video playback components we can simply leverage. On Linux, its a lot more do-it-yourself, or at least close integration requires a lot of work.

Thanks guys. So Linux can't deal with HDR out of the "box" & yes, the mkv files are HDR. It's funny, I'm a video assist technician in film production (record & playback monkey) & I commonly work with a straight feed from Panavision Alexa's, RED Cameras etc, & it looks fantastic. I don't really see the need for HDR & Dolby vision. It often looks too unnatural to my eye. I'll eventually give JRiver MC 27 a shot, & if it doesn't help I'll continue to dual boot.
