JRiver MC 27 starts automatically when running Descript
« on: December 27, 2020, 10:26:02 am »

I have this weird issue.

I use a transcription program called Descript (you can download a free trial here for testing: https://www.descript.com/).

Everytime I start Descript, JRiver starts. Descript is probably oprening some MP4s in the background, but I'm not asking JRiver to do anything.

I've disabled all the file associations in JRiver, as I only ever want it to be called as an external player from CMC, my MyMovies frontend.

But it's like a malware, it keeps popping up and there is no way to disable it.

As it stops me from working, I had to uninstall it.

Hopefully you'll find a solution, as I can't stop using Descript.

Thanks!

It's not a JRiver problem.

We saw a similar problem with a Sony product a few years ago.

Why would it not be a JRiver problem?

I don't want JRiver to start. Descript doesn't need or want JRiver either.

How come JRiver starts unrequested when another software opens .mp4 files?

When JRiver is not installed, no other player is started.

So this is a JRiver problem.

At least please try to reproduce.

I tried to re-install JRiver, in case it was a simlar issue to the Sony Vegas problem, but the problem is still there even if JRiver is installed last.

I completely disabled windows autostart and that seems to have resolved it for now.

Weird that JRiver pops up like this when all the association are disabled during install, but at least this workaround should help me to keep using it.

Try the publisher of the other program.  They probably know the problem.

Disable the ASIO feature in MC.

I don't use ASIO in MC, I only use it in REW and I haven't installed anything ASIO related, so I have no idea where to disable that in MC.

It is likely that Descript uses ASIO though.

If you have an option that causes issues with multiple programs, you might want to disable it by default...

Anyway, the Autostart disable seems to be a decent workaround for now.

Tools > Options  > General > Features.  Uncheck ASIO.

Uncheck WDM while you're there.

There is a search window at the bottom of the options page.

Thanks, I unchecked ASIO, WDM was already unchecked.
