5.1 sound output not happening - Solved
« on: February 05, 2021, 12:23:26 pm »

Hi Guys,

I've been banging my head up against this for 2 years now (on and off) & I cannot work it out.
So please please please help.

It's unmodified Intel hardware, definitely works in device manager. Have configured and tested the output using the tool (windows-controlpanel image attached). So I know it does 5.1 sound as I can hit each of the speakers & the sound comes out of each.

So the simple question is:
How can I get 5.1 output to my 5.1 amplifier through the HDMI connector please?
This worked on my other PC with Intel HDMI output.

I'd hugely appreciate any help from someone "in the know" as to what it is that's not working, and how I can fix it.
Many thanks in advance.

Summary of the Issue:
I want to listen to my nice 5.1 audio through my nice 5.1 amplifier to my nice speakers in 5.1 format.
Like I used to with my old (dead) PC.

Steps to Reproduce the Issue:
I ran a proof of concept on old PC, worked fine.
Moved to my target system, failed.

What You Expect to Happen:
I expected to get 5.1 output as before on pevious (now dead) PC.

What Actually Happens:
MC27 just refuses to send 5.1 sound out

Provide the exact text of error messages received:
Attached is the screen shot of the "Audio Path" popup.
Basically it always says "...2ch using Direct Sound (not a direct connection)"
Always.

Steps You Have Tried to Resolve the Issue:
Proved the 5.1 output is working on the PC, with the Control Panel testing each speaker in turn, works as expected.
Upgraded to MC27 (because it was the right thing to do to support the product, worked on previous version on other PC)
Changed all of the available MC27 options (that I know about):
Only DSP Studio Output Encoding is Dolby Digital (only option as I don't think I have a DSD DAC/decoder).
Regardless of the Tools-Options-Audio device, (Direct Sound or WASAPI or whatever).
Regardless of the Tools-Options-DSP & Output format, (Dolby Digital/No up or down mixing/5.1 channels)
Regardless of Tools-Options-Settings-Bitstreaming (none/yes-HDMI)

Other Info
Operating System and Version :
Windows 8.1 Pro 32 bit (64 bit is the same).

Full Version of JRiver:
27.0.20 (32 bit)(64 bit is the same)

PC Hardware:
Wintel W8 pro
Intel Atom x5-Z8300 Cherry Trail
(32 bit and 64 bit versions)

Sound Card:
None - uses HDMI output

Video Card:
Intel HD Gen8 Graphics
HDMI (1.4)

Amplifier:
Massive Yamaha 5.1 capable, with DTS decoder and Dolby Prologic IIx or II decoder.

Thanks in advance, much appreciated.

Only DSP Studio Output Encoding is Dolby Digital (only option as I don't think I have a DSD DAC/decoder).

Your screenshot indicates you are trying to encode everything to Dolby Digital.  Don't do that. That's exactly what that option does.

Fix the following settings:
DSP Studio Output Format: Make sure the module is enabled (CHECK the box next to the words Output Format)
DSP Studio Output Format: Output Encoding=NONE; Channels=either Source # of Channels, or 7.1 Channels; Mixing=No Upmixing or Downmixing
DSP Studio Output Format: Sample Rate for everything at 192,000 and less should be set to "No Change"

Options->Audio->Audio Device: Pick the WASAPI option for RX-V3067. The screenshot indicates you are set to DirectSound.

After you do this, if you play the same track as you did in the screenshot, you will see those two lines (Resample... and Encode...) are no longer present in Audio Path, and the output line at the bottom will indicate 6 channels.
