New 7.1 System Setup
« on: March 25, 2021, 08:53:36 pm »

Hey everyone,

Very new to JRiver media center.  I have a 7.1 theater setup that I would like to use for mainly video playback.  I'm using an htpc connected to a marantz amp.

My question is, how do I setup JRiver media Center 27 correctly to play PCM to my receiver?  I have setup my sound options to WASAPI/ installed WDM driver for windows.  I do not see PCM show up on my receiver.  My setup is attached.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You don't specify how you are actually connected. Use HDMI, with WASAPI.

Set channels = 7.1, and set no upmixing or downmixing.

In audio options, set bitstreaming to none.

That's it. MC will be outputting PCM.  The WDM driver is irrelevant for MC output.

Thanks for the information.  I think I also had a bit of a hiccup on my end.  I have my HTPC connected directly to the television and was using eARC to pass sound to my receiver.  I think this is changing the signal to PCM - Stereo and not multi channel.  I'll take another output from my Video Card and connect directly to the AVR.  I think this should allow PCM multi-channel support!

Why run it to the TV at all?

Originally because I wanted to run VRR and ALLM from my PC to my TV for gaming.  My receiver doesn't support these features yet but I have a feeling i'll be upgrading later this year.

Well, you may be stuck.

A lot of TVs won't pass multichannel audio at all (2ch only), and a lot of the ones that will pass multichannel will pass it only encoded as Dolby Digital AC3 (which is lossy).

You'll have to investigate the capabilities of your TV, as that sort of thing is usually not advertised.

A HDMI splitter/switch might help.

Yes, a splitter is a good idea, as you'll be able to send one HDMI signal to both the TV and the receiver.

But you might encounter a lip-sync problem. The audio might be processed by the receiver faster than the video can be processed by the TV, and if so you would need to compensate with a delay. Your receiver might have an audio delay feature.  If the audio lags behind the video, so that the video needs to be delayed... video delays are very expensive.

I've decided to route the PC through the receiver to the TV.  It seems to work best at this point in time.  If down the line I require VRR VLLM, i'll invest in a new receiver.  I spend most of my time watching movies anyways.

Works well and I can turn bitstreaming on whenever I need atmos!

You can make a Zone Switch to do that automatically.
