Where are playlists stored?

I posted a reply to that question but the thread is quite old.  After copying my music files to a new computer and installing MC26, I let auto import run.  To my surprise I had two copies of each old playlist which also had occasional errors in the track name and author fields.  The music file names (...mp3) were correct.

I though that music files did not get changed but where did the playlist info come from?  I did not reload my library - only the music files.  Could it be that the tags on the music files are modified by playlist info - thus music files are updated when playlist info is changed?
