Schiit Gungnir MB Unison and JRiver
« on: May 26, 2021, 10:29:06 am »

I'm near the end of my rope. Been attempting to implement Schiit Gungnir MB Unison USB with JR and am out of ideas. Lots to the story but I'll hit the high spots and maybe someone can show me the error of my ways. In a nutshell:

NUC dedicated server, Windows 10, up to date. Controlling remotely.
I can get a Wyred for Sound DAC 2 to work using their supplied drivers which show up in JR "audio device".
My understanding is that Windows doesn't need any additional drivers for the Schiit, yet I don't see it in the "Audio Device" list on JRiver, so can't choose it as an option.
Schiit does show up in Windows Device Manager.
Many hours pouring over tutorials, posts and troubleshooting guides and I'm stilled a stumped old guy.
Help is appreciated.

Does Schiit provide a driver on their website? If so, you might give that a try.

They say none needed for Win 10. In Windows Device Manager it shows USB Audio 2.0 as the associated drivers for Gungnir. I would expect to see same in Audio Device on JR, but no joy there. Is there a way to add to Audio Device list manually?

I see and have tried a couple of Remote Audio options, also a no go. To be sure I understand, does "remote" in this case just mean it's not using anything innate to server?

Try posting a screenshot of your list of audio devices in MC's Options > Audio > Audio Device section by clicking the device and displaying the drop down menu.

If you're using the 64-bit version of Media Center, have you tried using the 32-bit version? Otherwise you might need to contact Schiit regarding this.

Don't know if you've already seen this, but there's a few tips on the Schiit website if the DAC is not showing up asyou say "Schiit does show up in Windows Device Manager."

Specifically could be the actual port and lack of power:

That powered hub did seem promising and I ordered one and tried it to no avail. Since then, the DAC has been back to Schiit for a health check. They apparently replaced the USB Unison board and tested, but it acts exactly the same on my end. I'll try again for good measure. Thanks for the ideas.

Re-tried the powered hub which changed... nothing. Man, this is frustrating. Schiit has given their best shot and so have I. I was hoping someone here had similar experience and could shed light. I'm stumped.

Am I wrong to expect USB Audio 2.0 drivers to show up in "Audio Devices" within MC?

No, when you connect a USB Audio Class 2.0 DAC the Windows OS installs the drivers (if any are available via Windows Update) and will appear as an audio output in the system's volume control. And normally after the OS installs and the device and says it's ready it'll show up in Media Center's Audio Devices list. My Schiit DACs work just fine this way, I plug them in and Windows installs the device and then they appear within MC's Audio Devices list.

If I had to guess, for some reason the Windows system isn't correctly installing it or the unit is malfunctioning. Have you tried changing USB cables and/or USB ports on the PC? Who knows, it might help. Or have you tried it on a second PC to see if it shows up? If I were you, I'd definitely be contacting Schiit about it, because to me it sounds like a hardware issue with the unit malfunctioning (as it seems to have a history of doing so). Maybe they'll swap the unit for another one? It's actually uncharastic of a Schiit DAC to not work after plugging it in and they certainly work in Media Center, lots of people using them.

Awesome Donkey, you are indeed awesome. Your explanation of how it should work put me onto scrutinizing the PC rather than DAC and MC. This lead me to Windows Audio Troubleshooting, in which I got an unexpected message. Something to the effect of "this can't be run remotely". Hmmmm...
I dragged out a monitor, mouse and keyboard, hooked directly to server on the living room floor was instantly gratified to see the the Gungnir as an output device. Glory halleluiah, my friend, I have music once again.

So if someone should encounter same roadblock I did, give direct connection a try. I learned something today, it's a good day!
