This was installed on a dev box that already had 27 and a git master build of Plasma5, fwiw.  I did install clean on another bone-stock Tumbleweed/Plasma5 install and had no issues on first startup.

Edit:  Actually, I did get an ffmpeg update shortly after the install, could that be it?

The one on the machine shouldn't make any difference, MC should just be using the one it downloads. The only thing I can think of is that we might have missed a dependency with our specification, which is in the .deb control file or if you are installing non-debian that didn't translate somehow.
