The NAS seems to be causing this. @JimH: you were right.

I tried several combinations of protocols and apps - even .34 is impacted, so forget my remark.

I found out that Synology has issued at least 2 patches for the SMB protocol on DSM 7.0. I'm considering to go back to 6.2.4.

MC 28 is off the hook.

@HaWi:  Even with avoiding SMB and sticking to afp only, the problem occurs. So I did not try out NFS, but I keep it in mind. Thank you very much again.

Well, afp has been deprecated for a while so I have never tried that. Trying NFS is going to be a lot easier than reverting to 6.2.4. I am am also using ConnectMeNow to auto-mount my shares on the iMac on re-start and to keep them mounted.
