mediacenter 27 crashes
« on: November 20, 2020, 03:30:12 pm »

Hi,

I have just rebuilt my htpc, a brand new windows 10 20H2 with just the drivers and jriver 27.0.26
Windows defender has been tamed. I watched some shows yesterday without problems. Tonight I watched a movie, the first hour was perfect, but then it started crashing every couple of minutes (tried another movie and some shows). I updated to 27.0.34 but the problem is still there. JRiver has become unusable.
I have attached a log of a crash, hope someone at jriver can have a look at it.

What GPU? My guess would be it's driver related. Have you tried switching between Red October Standard and Red October HQ?

GPU is GTX550Ti but there are no signs of a video driver crash, just mediacenter closing
just to be sure, I ordered a 1030, should be there on tuesday

Try this, especially when installing a new videocard:
https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

Follow the instructions, boot in safe mode, let it clean Nvidia driver settings and make sure you tick to prevent installing a driver from Windows update.

Then after reboot, download the new driver package from Nvidia and install it. Reboot.

I would suggest to not install Geforce experience on a dedicated HTPC.

DDU has helped me on several occasions in the past with weird and unexplained (video/game) behavior.

well i changed the videocard and the problem is still there :  a crash every 5 minutes.
So I formated, reinstalled windows 10h2, all updates, all drivers, reverted to mediacenter 26.0.107 x64, restored my library, tammed defender
Worked for a few hours but now crashes every 5 minutes.
I have a log + crash dump here : https://filesender.renater.fr/?s=download&token=750cb548-7472-4979-87aa-c931dc4e9ff9
Can someone at jriver have a look at it please.
one last thing to add, it crashes even when I listen to music

I think it's crashing analyzing audio on this APE file:
E:\Musique\The Police - Synchronicity [APE]\Synchronicity.ape

Would you be willing to send a copy of it to matt at jriver dot com?  I'll happily take a look.

Thanks!

Matt, since this is a recurring issue - it's impossible to prevent all possible kinds of corrupted/unexpected files - would it be possible to put a try/catch around the file import, so that it simply moves on to the next file without crashing the entire app?

MC could still generate some report to be sent to you for debugging/improvement, if needed.

Well I've had a bunch of tools run on my APE code and pound on it.  So I thought the crashes were out!

I think we try / catch as much as we can, but a crashed input plugin still crashes us.

Thanks for uploading.  Hopefully I'll be able to reproduce :)

Since upgrading to 21H2 on Windows MC 27 crashes while playing audio files; MC26 on same PC does not have issues; using Ayre QB9 With Bitstream = 4x DSD

MC 26 and 27 crashes while playing /riping audio and video files on CD/DVD player, but JRiver 24 works fine !

- Reinstall version > no effect
- Shut off antivirus ( Avira) > no effect

- Does'nt read the disk, when you insert it after MC has been started
- Crash when the disk is previouly in the cd play before running MC
   1 running MC 27
   2 reading a DVD
   > CRASH
   3 runing MC 27 a second time
   >direct CRASH

Is there a patch to solve this problem that some of us have met ?

Uninstall Avira and configure Windows Defender.  There is a thread here on Defender.

NOTE THAT MC 27  has a bug related to M4A files; analysis of these files causes MC 27 to crash; work around is to 1) Remove all these files from your library and configure auto-import not to analyze files.:

A. Auto Import
1) Disable analysis during import,
2) Disable import from re-importing files removed from the library
B. Find and delete all M4A files from your library

Thanks Matt from JRiver for fixing this in MC 28 and for the Work Around --
