MC 27 very slow to save art to external file

I have about 38,000 tracks, and whenever I use Tools ► Cover Art ► Save art to my nominated folder, it starts off at a good clip of several files per second but after a while it slows down to a painful speed of about 3 seconds per file. So far it has been running for about 11 hours, and I'd forecast it to take another 30 minutes. The CPU is running at about 30-50%, and the folder being saved to is on an external SSD to which I can do file copying at about 200MB per second.

Is that normal?

To avoid this I usually just save the art of recently added albums, but every now and then I prefer to save it all to make sure that some haven't been missed.
