My native dsd files (dsf) don't play play properly in MC28
« on: November 14, 2021, 04:24:51 pm »

I have a few dozen dsf files that I never had a problem playing in MC24 as native dsd files (1 x DSD). With MC28 they sound distorted an sometimes make a quivering sound. Is there a solution or does MC28 need a fix?

Why are you using (1 x DSD) to player native DSD files?  Are you converting them to PCM for DSP or other purposes?  If not, try leaving Output Formatting as (None).

At my place DSD 64 (1x) plays fine with rme ADI-2 DAC FS (native) or Devialet D220 Pro (DSD over DOP) with MC 28. Without details to DAC, OS its difficult to make any suggestions.

Same here but I still wonder why (1x) is used for native DSF files unless one is using DSP.  For the OP, it may be a complicating factor.

If I set output format none my dac converts in playback to pcm 352K in both mc24 and mc28. If I want to play the native dsd file in either MC24 or MC28 I must select "1 x dsd in native format" or higher. It works without a problem in MC24 but in MC28 it is distorted. My dac is a Mustec (LKS) 005. It seems to be a problem with MC28. My operating system is Windows 10.

The problem seems to be MC28. If I set output format to none, my dac converts in playback to pcm 352K in both mc24 and mc28. As a side question, what is the point of having native format options if choosing "none" would work?

It sounds like it may be MC, not your DAC, that is converting DSD to PCM. Do you have bitstreaming set? Are you using either WASAPI or ASIO for output? Make sure the volume level is set to maximum.  With the correct setting you should be able to send DSD directly to the DAC. What does Audio Path say when you are playing the DSD file? Is the output DSD or PCM?

The fact that Output Encoding 1x DSD is behaving differently in the two versions is troubling, but you should not have to use that option to play 1x DSD.

By setting Output Encoding to 1xDSD, you're actually converting everything to 1xDSD, even DSD files. If you're getting PCM output when trying to play the DSD tracks (with Output Encoding set to None), it means DSD bitstreaming isn't enabled. I have a hunch that'll solve your issue.

That was it. It is now set to DSD bitstreaming. It works! Thanks.

Strange.  I have run multiple DACs with multiple versions of MC and always set output format to "None" (except when I needed DoP) and in all cases, the DACs plays DSD or any other format I am send it.  It seems to me that MC is processing the file in PCM 352K and the output format is reformatting it to DSD.  Just saying.

Oops.  I see that others have piled on and that you have solved it.
