Why no 8xDSD (DSD512) in Mac Version

(1/1)

v_erich:
Hi,
I want to use upsampling to 8xDSD in my compatible DAC.
I found out that the Mac version is only capable of 4x, does this has a reason?

Thanks and BR
Erich

Can your DAC do 8x in DSD DoP mode (the only mode Mac supports)?
That seems very unlikely. Check it's specs.

Awesome Donkey:
To add to what Bob said above, because macOS can only do DSD over DoP and not native DSD, your DAC would need to support a PCM sample rate of 1411.2 kHz to do 8xDSD (DSD512) over DoP. I've never seen any DACs that go beyond 705.6 kHz, so 4xDSD (DSD256) is likely the current limit on macOS.

v_erich:
Ah, ok.
Thanks for the information!

My DAC can do DSD native 8x and PCM768kHz max.
So DSD over PCM is then limited to DSD 4x on a MAC.
I tested this DAC also with Windows/Linux and I remembered that I saw there the DSD8x, so my thought...

Just for reference, Windows and linux can do Native or DoP depending on the DAC and driver. Mac can only do DoP.
