Feature Requests: Audio Path
« on: March 09, 2022, 03:44:53 am »

I've come up with a couple ideas for improvements to the Audio Path window.

1) Add a mention whether or not exclusive mode is being used. Right now if you use WASAPI exclusive Audio Path states it's using WASAPI but it doesn't mention if it's in exclusive mode or not. Adding Exclusive mode information to Audio Path (e.g. WASAPI (Exclusive) instead of WASAPI alone in the Output line) would be very beneficial.

2) If possible and if certain conditions are met (e.g. using WASAPI exclusive with no DSP whatsoever) it should also have some sort of directly mentioned indication that the output is a bit-perfect output. I know the cog's color is supposed to be an indication of this (if I recall correctly) but not many people knows about that, so having some sort of indication that says so in Audio Path would likely be very beneficial as well.

I'll add this to the next build:
Changed: Made WASAPI report itself as WASAPI Exclusive when playing as exclusive in Audio Path.

It already reports direct connections (the thing that changes the cog color).  Look for "Direct" or "Direct (with adjusted volume)" at the top of audio path.

Also include Dither Mode in the Audio Path whenever it affects the output.  Take it into account, as well as the requirement for 100% MC Volume, if you add a bit-perfect indication.

Agreed, I like this. Also it could also mention if MC's resampler or the SoX resampler is being used too. That would be neat if all that info was in Audio Path! :D

True, but over the years I've gotten the impression that some users don't realize the term direct in this context actually means bit-perfect. What I was originally thinking above was requesting adding something like (bit-perfect) next to Direct so users would actually know, e.g. Direct (bit-perfect).

It already says the resampler.  My monitor speakers show:
Resample 44.1 kHz to 48 kHz with SoX

I coded it a little bit ago.

27.0.31 (11/11/2020)
10. NEW: Added the resampler type to audio path.

It would also be nice if Audio Path could show the format of the original audio stream (like AC3, DTS, TrueHD, DTS-MA, Dolby Atmos...)

It already does that to a degree

Huh, it does indeed! Thanks for the hint - never noticed it before, apparently :-)

I do check the signal mostly in DSP Studio since I can fire it up via shortcut Ctrl-D (no shortcut to Audio Path, right?) and there MC unfortunately does not show the source format (unless I am mistaken again)
