My setup is that the PC running MC is connected to the TV via HDMI, the TV forwards sound to an amp via optical sp-dif.  This is a great setup as if I plug anything else into the TV (such as PS2 etc) the sound also goes out to the amp.

The problem is, and MC is not alone in this, Spotify suffers the same problem, that when MC is playing a video, it requests for the display to stay active, but when playing an audio file it does not, it keeps the computer awake but not the screen, so the screen times out, goes black and off goes the sound.

Try Options > Audio > Settings > Disable display from turning off

I use that on my computer monitor which can double for playback and it works great.
