That fact this this exists seems like a bad idea to me.

Good to hear, been onboard since MC9 and never knew about that function on the lower toolbar.

So many goodies in MC must be impossible to know them all.

I think this is a good decision because of I'd guess many people have files on NAS which are set to sleep and also has an effect on performance on local files so thank you.

I wish some hunting could also be done to prevent MC trying to access on files in Standard View when just browsing. I'd guess something on screen refresh triggers some file access routine which then jams the UI for 10-60 seconds. It happens e.g. when right clicking file, entering search with mouse (I think it doesn't happen if keyboard shortcut ctrl-f is used) or switching to other tab with mouse. It is quite frustrating to wait up for a minute just to get GUI responsive again. My music files are local and on those view I haven't ever seen such jams.
