MC and ripping vinyl LPs ?
« on: March 16, 2003, 11:28:15 am »

I have ripped my CDs to APE using MC9, and now think about ripping my LP collection.

Any suggestions on how to rip vinyl ?
On the HW front, I am aware of the need to provide a phono preamp before the sound card line-in.

But what about SW ?

How do you minimize the need to type in the tagging information ?
What SW do you use to do the analog ripping ?
What bitrate/depth ?

I am currently unemployed, so low SW cost is important.

Thanks for sharing your experience !

Hi Rudy

There's some good help available at the top of this page. Put your mouse cursor on 'help', wait for the drop-down and then click on 'line-in recording'.

MC9 is great for recording from vinyl so that answers the software question.

As for the pre-amp, most turntables have one built in, so connecting from turntable line-out to soundcard line-in should be your first option. If this does'nt give you sufficient volume then connect from turntable line-out to soundcard microphone-in as sometimes there's a pre-amp on the soundcard as microphones work on a much lower level.

Try these first and come back with your results...

Good luck - Jim

This site has some good guidelines.

http://www.delback.co.uk/lp-cdr.htm

As for software, you just need a program that can record the input of your soundcard. MC can be used for this, but I have never used it, so I don't know how well it works. Audacity is a good freeware sound editor that can be used to record. Goldwave is a reasonbaly priced shareware sound editor. You can find them with a quick Google search.

If your records are in good condition ,you need only MC

Concerning the turnable ,i know you can find  small kind of 'mini-pre amp' at very cheap price.
People having a stereo with only 'auxilaires' output use it to plug they turnable  to the stereo.

I've never been able to try MJ/MC for recording because it doesn't recognize my Echo Audio Mia soundcard as a recording device, so I've been using Cool Edit 2000 with the Noise Reduction/Pop & Click Removal plugin.

Great info, thanks guys, but what about generation of tags with the least effort ?
Can I try to find the equivalent CD on YADB or CDDB and wholesale map the tags on the new rip ?

Any trick to encourage efficiency (laziness)   ;D

Ho ,Lazy
Open Recorder
options , uncheck 'unable automatic track spliting
c
close it
click on tracks on the top right
as you can see ,you can try to get infos for your record from YADB.
If you do not get it ,fill the window
LAZY as you are ,you may go to AMG and copy/past the songs names.
DO NOT forget to enter Time of the song.

Now we assume that you still have some strenght.
If not ,let say after a nap , click option again play a loud  part of your lp and use the auto adjust volume fonction.

Not as easy as to write. Start to play with an old lp.

My opinion is that you have to rip to WAV . Like it ,if there is some noises ,you would be able 'to clean it'

IPS; keep in mind that YADB and AMg speak aboutCds.
Sometimes the order of the songs are not the same. Sonetimes ,if a double lp ,the cd may have less tracks. An ,many times the cd has more tracks-extra tracks-
You can mess around in no time if you do not take care of it.
If you rip cassettes the difference with the cd can be even bigger

Yep - a good point from Zevele. - rip all the tracks to Uncompressed Wav to start with and then convert them when you've gone to bed 'cos you'll need the rest...

Back on the topic of pre-amps.......if you've got a stereo amp at home with a line-out, then plug the turntable into the amp and then connect the line-out from the amp to the soundcard. Whilst you're at it, plug the soundcard output to the amp line-in and listen to the real nice sounds....

Take it easy old chap, you must be getting weary !!

A program I used to split the LP-side WAV files into tracks is Audio Surgeon from Voyetra...$30 I think. The advantage here is you can put markers in the WAV file (after click removal) at the song breaks and name the markers like the song. Then under properties, you can input Artist/Album/Genre/Year one time. When you split into separate files based on markers, it uses the marker name for filename AND puts it in tag info. Also puts all tag info from Properties in each file.

This saved me a lot of keying. Also, when you split the WAV, you have the option of encoding to MP3/WMA.

You can split with MC Media Editor, but it's lots more work.
