There is no "fundamental" issue with 16 channels, its just rather uncommon to have any audio files over 8 channel, and many components don't deal with it properly.
We're looking into it, but it might be a bit.

Hey mate, any idea what the lineage is here? Retail Atmos from a disc converted to 16ch?

I didn't think the Dolby Atmos decoder / renderer worked with already encoded retail tracks?
