MC .58 has the same problem with cover art view - esc after displaying the picture leads directly to a screen completely black and does not accept any keystrokes,

It is reproducible...

It works fine on Monterey. The problem occurs on the Ventura beta version...

We'll probably wait until they shake out the beta to see if they fix it first.

MC will drop back to read-only mode if it can't get permission to filter the keys.
Then you will see the behavior your are describing.

What situations prevent it from getting the permissions it needs?
