Hi! Upgrades from 24 to 29. Unable to set fixed columns lenght (audio). They always go back to original set up lenght. Ripping parameters, destination, backup, etc.

Try restoring your last MC 24 backup (they are made automatically), and it will probably fix your issues. This assumes of course, you didn't make a point of uninstalling MC 24 (upgrading to a new version of MC does not automatically uninstall the previous version)

In the menu, go to File/Library/Restore Library….  In the ensuing dialog be sure to tick the Restore Settings checkbox.  From there, browse to the MC 24 backup folder, and select the very last backup zip file.

I was originally going to reply with just that as well Matt, but then I noticed the OP also said "Ripping parameters, destination, backup, etc....", so I figured restoring all his settings from the previous install might resolve everything in one shot.

Here's two ideas (maybe this should be in the Too Easy thread too?) since this seems to come up every once in a while. 1) Have MC disable the column auto-size setting if it's importing a library backup and there's saved column size data present. 2) When a user resizes a column manually, maybe either MC should disable the column auto-size feature or prompt the user on if they want to disable it?

I can see how this can be a hassle when updating from an older MC version where you had all your column sizes manually customized, only to upgrade and for MC to auto-size the columns automatically, then when you go to resize it again and close MC and reopen it, it's reset back to the auto-size which can be very frustrating.

I think this comes up more than just once in a while… Not column auto-sizing specifically, but people upgrading to a new version where their previous settings, for whatever reason, did not automatically import from the prior version.  Maybe it's more likely to happen when you bypass several major versions between upgrades (as is the case with the OP)?

Perhaps any time a user installs a new major version, at the very end, MC pops up a dialog that asks would you like to import your settings from your previous version?  I realize that MC is supposed to do this by default, so this should not be necessary. That said, I have definitely helped a number of users who lost their settings when they upgraded simply by having them restore a previous versions backup. And if I've personally helped 4 -5 users with this issue, you know there are likely many hundreds more who have had this happen, but not knowing what else to do, simply manually reconfigured the program the way they used to have it.  And if a user has to do this each time they do an upgrade, it will leave a very bad taste in their mouth, and likely lead them to using/buying a different media player.

Or maybe that portion of the code just needs to be made more robust so there are less failures in this regard?

Hi guys, Thank you for your replies. I Finally had time to Restore settings. Thanks HPBEME. It's weird, I never had to do all that after an update since 2009...

The restore action generated an other problem. Last Backup from MC24 was from may. I ripped at least 40 CDs after that restore. Many files had been added to lists... :-(

I ever retreived files that are on the disk but not in the library but I don't find that option anywhere in MC29. Maybe I just mist it!

After that, I guess I'll have to retreive myself wich albums were missing to lists?

I'm happy to hear the restore resolved some of the issues. I have no idea why settings don't always get updated when you update to a new version of MC, I just know that it occasionally happens. And I have some good news for you… You can still retrieve your playlists that were overwritten when you restored the MC 24 backup, or any other tags related to those new 40 ripped discs for that matter.

When you do the restore option, there are two checkboxes.  One is to restore the library and playlists, and one restores the settings.  Most times, you are likely to want to restore both.  For your prior issue, you needed to restore the settings, so you could get all your column widths back.  But you must have also had the checkbox for library and playlists also ticked.  So run the restore operation again, but this time, restore from the MC 29 backup folder and select the zip file closest to the date you last ripped a CD. Also, make sure the settings checkbox is NOT ticked this time. That should return you to the place you were after you ripped your last CD, but with the settings for the column widths maintained.

Another way to go about this more manually, but with complete control over what gets restored, is to use the following approach:
Navigate to the folder containing MC 29 backups - not through the restore option we did before, but using Windows Explorer.  If you do not know where it is, go to options/file location/program options/library backups.  It will either be the default location that MC sets automatically, or another place that you at one point designated. You will now see a bunch of zip files - choose the zip with a modified date that is closest to the date you ripped your last disc.  Open another Explorer window and navigate to MC's current/active library.  That will be located here:
C:\Users\your-user-name\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 29\Library

Locate the windows side-by-side, and find the playlistx item. Drag-and-drop from the backup zip file to the active library (say yes to overwriting the existing file), and viola, the playlists that got overwritten by the MC 24 backup are now replaced with the MC 29 playlists you made after your last rips.  Repeat this for any other fields/tags that you may have updated after ripping those last CDs but were overwritten by the previous restore operation. For example, you may have rated a number of those songs, or added lyrics, or keywords, or assigned genres… whatever.  Just drag-and-drop the corresponding field files from the MC 29 backup to the MC 29 current library, and you should be back to where you were.

This can be very useful when you want to recover just certain fields from certain backups at certain points in time. This can be done across different versions of MC (like we did above for MC 24 and MC 29), or just among the various backup folders within a single installed version of MC. 

FYI… You may have to do this as an admin - I am not positive, as I've always set up my user account with admin privileges.
