Tone Mapping improvements

(1/4) > >>

I recently compared the tone mapping between madVR, MPV and JRiver. MPV and JRiver have similar problems compared to madVR. They are not able to tone map every picture to an adequate brightness. With JRiver there are always scenes (e.g. in "Luca") which are too dim. If the slider for brightness is adjusted (or the peak measurement is activated/deactivated) other movies/scenes don't fit in average brightness.

Beside that the automatic brightness adjustment doesn't work well. In "The Hobbit 1" there is a strange brightness jump in chapter 2 when the camera pans over the hill to the sky.

And a third observation: JRiver's tone mapping has a slight orange tint in comparison to the other two.

Are these things going to be fixed or optimized? :)

What is your video setting in MC?

Do you mean JRVR (our renderer) when you say JRiver?

What is the video you're playing?

I played around with the marked settings. But none of the combinations were really satisfying regarding the average brightness for all scenes.

Yes, I mean the internal renderer JRVR.

I was testing with "Luca" and "The Hobbit", because the first one has very high average brightness (much >100 Nits) and the second one has a few bright areas with high saturation.

These things have nothing to do with the problems I'm talking about. I compared tone mapping in software and don't want to pass through untouched HDR to my projector. I know what I'm doing here. I'm in HTPC and HT stuff since 20 years now (just google me). :)

My concern is to get a tone mapping that can compete to that of madVR to have an alternative. If JRiver (and MPV) get improved in this regard it can exist some day. That's why I started the topic.
