Author Topic: SACD from Win11 JRiver server to MacOS JRiver client always plays first track  (Read 1025 times)

I've always run 2 instances of JRiver (both windows) -- server hosting my library and client connected to my DAC.

About 6mo ago I replaced my JRiver client (Win10) with a Mac Mini M1 and all was good accept for my CUE+ISO SACD albums.  No matter which track I choose, it instead always plays the first one.  I know it's not the server's fault because I have other uPnP/DLNA streaming devices (Gustard R26 and Matrix I2) that play the other tracks just fine.

Also, it doesn't matter if the DLNA server is configured for "Original" or "Specified Output Format" (ex: server-side DSD => PCM conversion)

I figured this was too big of an issue to go unnoticed so I never bothered to post here.  Please please fix!

The solution depends on if you are playing from the client MC as opposed to pushing the track to the client PC from the server through DLNA (remote zone).
Both are solvable.
If you are running the Mac as a DLNA renderer, set the DLNA server on the PC to "Specified format when necessary", choose a format and go to the advanced audio options in there and just choose SACD

If running as a Media Server client, the similar setting is in Media Network Client options on the client.

I recently added a dsd module in my amplifier and i've had the same experience, isn't this something that should "just work"? I've considered to split the tracks into seperate files (dsf if mc supports it) to avoid it but it seems i need paid third party software to do this

If you want to extract DSF files from a SACD ISO, just use Sonore's ISO2DSD app which is free. Or you can do it manually via the terminal via sacd_extract.

I'm very green when it comes to this stuff, webpage says doubleclick to open but nothing happens and windows asks for an app, open with winrar only has a bunch of jibberish files but no .exe i can use.

If you're using a Mac, then you should use the Mac version of ISO2DSD and the instructions provided on the webpage. Those exe files are for Windows only, but on Windows I find it's easier to use sacd_extract from the command line/terminal, versus installing the Java runtime and using the .jar ISO2DSD GUI.

I tried to download it on mac but it "eats" the file when i download it on mac, i se the file disappear in seconds by its own after it is downloaded, no idea what's going on. and on windows the jar file can't run when i doubleclick it and only asks for an app to open it with. with windrar there is only .class files inside no exe to run

It's worth noting that ISO2DSD requires the Java runtime to be installed in order to use it, at least it does on Windows and probably the same on Mac and Linux too, not sure. After installing the .jar file should work fine then and here's a semi-tutorial for Windows and ISO2DSD here: https://audiophilemusic.io/converter-sacd-iso-to-dsd-format/

You might try this one:
https://github.com/setmind/SACDExtractGUI
This is the current (last) zipfile from 2019
https://github.com/setmind/SACDExtractGUI/releases/download/v0.1/SACDExtractGUI.zip
You also need a modified sacd_extract executable. Looks like you'd need to compile one from here:
https://github.com/setmind/sacd-ripper
Note that it doesn't seem to compile on arm currently. (fixed).
link to universal binary zipfile
https://tinyurl.com/53vjxtu7
You also need to install java.
Try this one:
https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/downloads/#jdk19-mac

I find this simple GUI easy to use.

Anything command line, github etc is where i just can't. I have a learning block or something no matter how well people explain code to me i just don't get it, even simple stuff. I really wish jriver just fixed this bug or even added the feature to allow splitting sacd isos into dsf files, these features are well within reasonable for jriver as an audiophile and advanced tool for media enthusiasts.

As I told you before, you can easily play them as is.
The method is different depending on whether you are playing them as a media client Mac connected to your Windows 11 server VS playing them TO the media client Mac FROM the windows 11 server (that's DLNA server settings on the windows PC).

Which method are you using?

So you're saying that I should enable media library / dlna on my mac, get on remote desktop to my windows pc, open mc, locate the one song i want to listen to, play the specific sacd track to my mac through the windows pc to my mac with dlna via remote desktop instead of just playing from my mac mc client like normal and that is a better solution than making it work on mac natively?

No, I'm saying those should act the same.
Pushing from the MC server to the Mac should work as should using the MC Mac as a media server client.
I tested both methods without issue.

Isn't it better to just fix the bug so it works consistent and as expected instead of telling users workarounds? SACD playback should be flawless on an enthusiast media player like jriver since it isn't too much of an obscure format anymore and more and more people have equipment capable of playing it.

It's not clear there is a bug.

Like I said, it works either way for me.
We'd need to figure out what you are doing differently.

To clarify;

I use a m1 mac mini most of the day when I am not playing games on my windows 11 pc, i run media center as a server on a third computer that runs windows 10, headless

I connect to the windows 10 pc's library via remote library on my mac like i have many years now, aside from some minor shortcomings like not being able to add album art, this in combination with gigabit ethernet feels like MC and the files are local.

But now that I can play DSD after an upgrade to my system, a couple of SACD ISOs I had laying around only plays the beginning of the CD as if it was one big file and whatever track i try to play from it, it starts from the beginning of the cd aka track 1 no matter how much i try. Maybe if you insist this isn't a bug, I request the ability to split SACD ISOs into DSF files in future releases of MC which would make things easier in the long run.

I really wish there was an alternative way of getting DSF files instead of third party software that are gatekeeped behind extensive computer knownledge and understanding

I'm not saying that wouldn't be a bug.
I AM saying I can't reproduce the behavior.
On my system, trying to duplicate your setup, I don't get the same results.
In the screen shot below, I've connected my M1 to a Win10 PC with media network (selecting donnas-PC (Library Server))
Playing a SACD ISO on the Mac. Tracks transition as expected. Here you can see it playing the second track.
I'm playing to my Mac. Are you playing to something other than your Mac or attached USB DAC?

Edit: I should have chosen a different album! The track transitions but not the audio. Checking into it.

Huh, I see.

I'm playing to a DAC directly connected through one of the two usb ports of the mac mini with DoP, exclusive and integer enabled. To make sure there is no confusion, i can doubleclick on any of the tracks of the ISO and waveform loads and everything but the audio always start at the start of the ISO, track 1 even if i play track 2 or 10.

Found that!
Took a while. It was a cross platform bug when one of the computers involved windows.
It will be fixed in the next build (30.0.48 or newer)
