[solved] MC is unresponsive on Mint
« on: March 21, 2023, 09:02:40 pm »

I understand that Linux Mint is not a supported OS in the MC realm.

But MC had previously worked on my Linux Mint notebook (in my limited usage).

"previously" being up to and including 30.0.72.

But the latest update to a new version resulted in, well, a non-responsive MC.

OK, I am fully aware that MC is not supported on Linux Mint.

So... after this comment, I'll go away quietly in that acknowledgement.

But, if I may humbly add, I'm here if JR wants to investigate this issue on an unsupported OS, please let me know.

Did you also update mesa around the same time?  There were a rash of Mint users recently having issues because a mesa update broke their graphical acceleration entirely, and downgrading fixed it.  It manifested as a non-responsive white screen, does that sound like your case?

> Did you also update mesa around the same time?

For starters, thanks for moving my comment to the appropriate sub-forum.  I will try to be better in my posts in the future.

I don't know what "mesa" is. (yeah, I spent some time in my preferred search engine, but i still do not understand the relevance of the question.)

My plan on this laptop is to run the Linux Mint Update Manager to keep the laptop up to date. Which I do, and have done.  So, I am running 21.1 of Linux Mint.

To be honest, this is a secondary computing device for me.

Web access, email.  That's basically all I expect from it, aside from not having to deal with Windows.

Having a functional MC is a bonus (and, based upon the MC that I know, a way huge bonus  :)  ).

But it is not essential here on this laptop.

All that aside, if y'all want to troubleshoot, let me know.

I'm willing to help in any way I can.

Or, if JR decides that Linux Mint is an obscure distribution, I'm OK with that also.

Thanks for your time and, apologies, for possibly wasting your time.

In a (very) simplified explanation, Mesa is what Mint and other Linux distros use for video and whatnot. Ubuntu, Mint and other related distros seem to have pushed out an update which broke it for some MC users.

Likely going to need more information, like hardware specs of the system it's running on (and what kind of GPU does it have, a dedicated GPU from Nvidia or AMD or integrated graphics from Intel, for example) and how and where MC stops responding? When you start the app? When you go into theater view? When playing back video? Stuff like that.

It does kinda sound like the Mesa thing though.

OK, I understand that now.

First off, many thanks for your quick reply.  Apologies that it took me so long to get back to this thread.  Life happened. But now that taxes have been filed...  :)

Let's start with the hardware.  I am attaching a text log fie showing Mint's "System Information" report, and also a copy of the dmesg.

In the next message I'll try to show the problem I am having...

It does kinda sound like the Mesa thing though.

edit: wow, I meant that to say... It does not kinda sound like the Mesa thing though.  i.e., it had nothing to do with playback

My use of MC on this laptop is usually limited to looking through my MC database of media, and looking at what is happening in Cloudplay.  I don't use it for playback of audio or video.   For example, this evening I wanted to see which playlist had the Tubes song, "What Do You Want From Life."   :)

Attached is a screenshot of what I see when I click on the Cloudplay menu item in the left panel.  Notice that the list of contributes to Cloudplay is not present.  When I click on the blank area where i expect the list to be, there is no response.

Try signing in.

Try making the window wider or full screen.

Thanks for the quick response.

I had been signed in, and it had been working.

But I'll try signing in again.  Stay tuned...

OK, I signed in...

And it works as expected.

Thank-you!

To be honest, I had not noticed the "Sign in/Sign up" in the upper right-hand corner,. Probably because it was working for me prior to me experiencing the issue, but had suddenly stopped working.  And my attention focus was on the left side of the Cloudplay screen.

For some reason, maybe the update to Mint 21.1 caused that?  I've had a couple other application issues with the Mint 21.1 upgrade, so, maybe that is the cause?

In any case, it is working now.

And most importantly....

Many thanks for yet another example of the superlative support here on this forum!

(I do not say that lightly....)

Thank-you.

One more data point.

I just downloaded and updated to the 30.0.83 version of MC.

After the update, when I went into Cloudplay, I had to sign in to Cloudplay once again.

Probably because it has a new browser build in it.
That gets updated every couple of years.

That could be.

fwiw, I just upgraded to 30.0.95 on Linux mint, and I did not have to log in to Cloudpay.

Everything is working great!

thx.
