MC crashes
« on: April 25, 2023, 10:18:37 am »

I have been using MC on and off for years, I seem to keep having the same issue, over multiple MC additions and multiple hardware variations and multiple versions of windows.

Seems like MC starts off good at first, but it seems to slowly corrupts itself and crashes.  Let's talk about this last time for me, I whipped the drive, reinstalled windows 10, installed MC 30, added my music library, everything ran great for about a month, only used for music at first, don't think I had a single crash, then I started trying to use MC for video playback, all movies stored on my NAS, added my movies to the library, imported all the meta data, I didn't change much in settings, now MC crashed almost every other day, even when playing music mind you, haven't gotten to movie playback issues, which there are some.  So again, to clarify, now crashes often when playing music.  I understand there are a lot of variables here, but over the years with all variations, seem to have the same problems.  My main goal is for music, I really do not need to play videos, I have other options for that if need be.  So, one question is, should I switch to a Mac mini, is this just a window thing?  Just frustrated..........

Thanks

Possibilities are:
Antivirus
Drivers
Bad files
Insufficient power
Registry "cleaners"
NAS issues

and so on.
Take one machine and see if you can find the cause.

You can set up a new test library.  File > Library Manager.

Use only local files.  Test without the NAS.  That will tell you if it's network related or not.

Use only a single file type.

You could read the Weird Problems thread in my signature for other ideas.

It's probably not related to Windows.  But it's possible.

Logging might help find the cause.  https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Logging

I get what you're saying here Jim, but that's the basic trouble shooting guide that almost any software developers would state, not running an anti-virus, its one of my older gaming rigs, so enough power, most other things would be hard to trouble shoot, for the crashed are not constant.  Music is on the local hard drive, movies on NAS.  If it was a NAS issue then I would think it would only be an issue when playing movies but it's not.  I have over a thousand songs, so it would be hard to find a corupted file but again it ran fine playing music only for a month or so prior to adding movies, so I would guess that's not it, but impossible to know for sure.  Do you know if there is any kind of music file analyzer that could help?  Do you have a suggestion on a good registry cleaner.  As stated, before it's a clean install of Windows and MC, drivers are up to date.  I wish I could consistently reproduce the issue, but I cannot.  Again, is Mac better for this?

If you're running Windows, look at the Windows Defender thread on the forum.  Follow its advice.

This probably isn't a Windows problem.

It's probably not an MC problem.

Simplify as I suggested above to see if you can narrow down the cause.

Read the Weird Problems thread.  It's amazing.

Thanks Jim, will look at the other thread.  I also turned-on Logging so hopefully I can catch it.  I turned of Windows Defender, will keep after it.

Configure Windows Defender.  It's possible it's causing a problem.

So I did catch a crash, this is newer, normally MC would just lock up and I would have to force a shut down, but more lately Windows will crash and restart, attached is the log

Windows crashing is almost certainly a hardware problem.

Your log doesn't log the crash or contain a crash dump.  This probably means Windows just rebooted because of hardware.

You were playing this file:
4240381: 6888: Playback: CJRPlaybackEngine::Play: Playing: C:\Users\mpg73\OneDrive\Desktop\Music\Rock\Paradise City (Explicit).flac

But the last line in the log is nothing special:
4242206: 7620: Sharing Plugins: CHTTPListenerWorker::HandleRequest: UDP: 192.168.1.225: M-SEARCH: http://239.255.255.250:1900*

It was about 22 seconds after playback started that the system crashed.

We need a Media Center dump with a crash.  You'll get that when the program crashes instead of Windows itself.

Thanks.

Is that file in MS OneDrive (the cloud service), as opposed to being on a local disk or NAS?  If so, I would be very suspicious of that.

Thanks, ya I was wondering if Cloud Play could be a factor, but I would suspect that even if there was packet drops that it would not cause MC to crash of force a restart.  Got to love windows......

So after playing around, I pretty much ruled out hardware issues, I have put it through its paces with other programs including other music and video players, not one crash and not one forced windows to restart.  So I am leaning towards MC being the problem.  I did have a lot of songs loaded from MC Cloud, wonder if that was an issue, but not sure how that would crash MC and or cause Windows to do a restart.  Let's say I have a corrupted music file, how would that cause these issues, would it just not play?  Also again, I have seemed to be plagued with MC crashing after time, over many versions of MC many versions of handwear and mutule versions of Windows going all the way back to Windows XP.   This time the problems didn't seemed to start until I added movies to the data base.  Worked fine for a few months with only music.

That's not proof that it isn't hardware.

ya, there's no way that I can prove it to 100%, but I am not having issues with other programs that can also stress the system the same as MC may,  I installed KODI for movie playback, I installed Roon for music, been leaving things play and no issues.  Not a single crash of any kind.  So yes, the finger is pointing towards MC.  Don/t know what else to try to trouble shoot it, especially when I was never able to figure out and reproduce the crashes in MC.

Simplify and test.  Test a new library and import single filetypes until it breaks (or doesn't).

Thats what I am saying, same library different players, same PC, not sure how much more I can simplify, with the exception of MC Cloud.  Will let this run for a while till I switch back to MC, just to see if I run into any issues with hardware and or Windows.

What is "MC Cloud"?

Do you mean JRiver's Cloudplay?

Or Apple iCloud?

Or Microsoft OneDrive, which Brian suggested above:

JRiver cloud play is what I was referring too, I don't know why the log said the file was OneDrive, for all my local music is stored in a folder on my desktop, I uninstalled Microsoft OneDrive, so not sure why it shows OneDrive in the location of file. (C:\Users\mpg73\OneDrive\Desktop\Music\Rock\Paradise City (Explicit).flac)

It's because by default OneDrive backs up files on the desktop to the cloud. It's very annoying on clean Windows installs, and turning that off in OneDrive's settings is one of the first things I do after a new Windows install.

In my opinion the desktop isn't the best place to keep your music files. Ideally you'd want to store them on a drive (e.g. second HDD/SSD, NAS, etc.) that's not your primary Windows OS boot drive. This helps ensure that in case you ever need to reinstall Windows, you won't lose all your music files... though of course this isn't infallible or perfect, so having multiple backups in different locations is a good idea. Right now if you have to reinstall Windows with all your music in a folder on the desktop without any backups or storing them in a separate drive, you'll lose everything.

Thanks.  That's Cloudplay.

Yes, thanks for the advice, I know all this LOL, I moved them there trying to trouble shoot this, originally everything was on my NAS, did not make a difference.  But again, I will state that MC ran fine for months with only using MC to play music, I don't recall even adding much song wise from JRiver CloudPlay, no issues until I started adding videos to MC, in fact if I remember correctly, MC crashed a few times during the import process and then meta data online look up process.  Then ever thing got worse, with more frequent crashes not to mention the Windows restarting.  I gave up on the video part, removed it from the library, but still crashes during music playback, and the windows error and the restarts got worse, I have stopped using MC for now and have not had a single Windows restart, at this point I believe it is a MC issue.  Is there an MC removal tool?  That goes above and beyond the simple uninstall.  I would gladly remove MC and reinstall it, but form past experiences the only solution is to do a fresh Windows install and then reinstall MC.

So went some time without using MC, no issues with the PC, no crashes no forced restart, So I am pretty sure it had something to do with MC.  So I did a fresh Windows install and DL and installed MC again.  Before I did that, I deleted all the music and videos and only backed up my MC Cloud playlist.  After I installed everything, I restored my library, went one by one through every song to see if there was as song that was causing the issue.  No problems, so my next step was to add my local music and see if that causes an issue.

If it crashes while trying to import your media, you likely have bad files that's causing it.

normally crashes during playback, I will leave it running 24/7, I play music all night while I sleep, most mornings I just turn off the amp and leave MC running.
