Does JRVR reset video gamma tables (when a 3DLUT is in use)?

(1/1)

mattkhan:
One of the options in displaycal is whether to embed the 1DLUT into the generated 3DLUT, this is found at

Options > Advanced > Do not use video gard gamma table to apply calibration

As I understand it this option should be ticked only if JRVR resets the video card gamma table to a linear calibration when playback starts

I suspect this is the case for JRVR (it does reset that gamma table) but can that be confirmed (or refuted)?

Hendrik:
JRVR does not modify the gamma ramps, no.

mattkhan:
Can that be added as an option? It seems simpler to me to bake it all into one 3DLUT rather than having to think about 2 things that can theoretically vary independently.

Hendrik:
Microsoft strongly recommends against changing the gamma ramps from applications, because there is cases where its behavior is undefined, plus its a global change rather then only for the video image. Hence why its not done.
There is also no cross-platform equivalence of such an option.

mattkhan:
Ok I see

Why is it a problem if it is done for video only? I am assuming video is full screen so it's the only thing you can see anyway
