Hi Res Sound

<< < (2/2)

bob:
BIS is upfront about the mastering process. Every SACD has the original format of the recording in the liner notes.
In the cases I mentioned 96khz/24bit 5.0 channel PCM with no mixing to a bass channel. That's also their standard for recordings in general.
In Orchestra Hall Minneapolis which has excellent acoustics, you can see the microphones positioning suspended from the ceiling on long thin wires.

Ultrasonic response (greater than 20,000 Hz) is not the reason to use high resolution recordings.  I do not believe that humans meaningfully sense sound in that area.

However, a "high resolution" file that is actually simply up-sampled is no better than the original and possibly worse.  So perhaps looking at the spectrum as a measure of the ORIGIN of the file has some utility.

I reject the idea that "most all high res" is simply upsampled.  On the other hand, I really don't care as I'm not a  big proponent of the format.  I've heard some really good high res recordings.  Most notably The Grateful Dead, American Beauty.  But others I don't seem to hear anything better than a CD version.

The real magic, as I previously stated, is in lossless movie audio.  Those are amazing.  Just watch the jungle scene in Raiders Of The Lost Ark as an example.

I was really amazed by the specs of different styluses regarding frequency response.

To add to Awesome Donkey's "most "hi-res" releases of albums on sites like HDTracks, Qobuz, etc. are basically scams" comment.
If any of you have an Amazon Music Account select a few Albums that are claimed to be in "HD" and you will eventualy come across one or more where there is mix of tracks in HD and SD.
You also easily find UHD Albums that have a mix of tracks in both UHD and HD, I've even found UHD Albums with a mix of UHD, HD and SD tracks.

Not only is it evident that those HD and UHD tracks are the result of Upsampling the fact that there are different sample rates on the same album points to them having been created by somebdy other than the Recording Company that released the album.

P.S. There is more than enough eveidence on sites like Discogs that the highest rate used for most Recording Studio downloadable releases is 24/48 and that the majority of them were in ALAC format.
