mc31 video playback failure same as mc28
« on: July 10, 2023, 01:12:28 am »

I am getting the same failure on video playback on MC31 that I did on MC28 but not MC25. Audio works fine. Have changed Red October standards to no effect. PC has more than enough capability to run videos. Also videos run normally on any other video program I try. Problem exists only on JRiver. MC31 /28 rips DVDs without problem but can't play its own rip. Older versions I was able to play DVDs without problem.

Hi,
Intel HD Graphics. Nothing much happens. The video file whether ifo or mp4 is in a playlist. You click on it to open it and one of two things happens: the file goes to open and then a second later you are back where you started at the playlist; or the video file opens the player and there is a black screen. You reveal the player control at the top and it shows Play. You hit the Next tab and it goes to 2 but still a black screen, hit Next again and you go back to 1. Stop it and you are back to where you started at JRiver. Also the Video Editor hangs (Not responding)   while it is trying to open  a video file even though it acts like it is converting it. When it finishes it says: error.

That seems like a video driver issue.

That may be but the computer doesn't think so. Again every other program that can run a video runs these same videos without problems. If there is a specific driver that must be applied regardless of what the computer thinks then I would ask where to get it. Thanks

Just verified that MC25 plays videos without issue. Uninstalled MC28 and 31. Some program change after MC25 is blocking video playback. Hope this helps.

It's working, in general, so something specific about your machine is probably the cause.  I can't say what it is.  Have you tried on another machine?

yes I had this same problem on a predecessor to the current HP Business PC: a similar PC from Lenova. So it is not specific to this one computer. The problem is specific to post MC25 versions. These are plain vanilla Windows 10 systems. I mostly use them for audio work but on occasion I do want to do simple video editing such as cutting.

You might want to post a log file from while it is happening.

RTWorkQ.DLL is a Windows file.  Your OS may not be working correctly.  Try a Google search, but be careful in following instructions.  A search at Microsoft would be best.

there is nothing specific about RTWorkQ.DLL on microsoft. I checked and I have both the 32 and 64bit versions on my computer. Troubleshooting doesn't turn up anything. I would add the failure to run videos in MC28 and 31 doesn't appear to generate Windows logs. Only the failure of the Video Editor to open video files that JRiver itself ripped successfully generates an error file as posted above.

What's the specs of your PC? Mainly the CPU in this case, and what version of Windows are you using?

I thought this was about playing video.  The specifics posted say "Media Editor".  What's that all about?  Does the windows version of MC have a basic editor or something?

There are two things malfunctioning on my computers. MC28 and 31 do not play videos but audio functions play normally. MC 25 plays videos and audio normally. Second, the Video Editor function accessed from the JRiver Menu is getting an error when it tries to open a video file ripped by JRiver itself successfully. The first problem in MC28/31 only does not generate a Windows log that I can see. Only the malfunctioning of the JRiver Video Editor generates a Windows log as I posted above.

Again I note that other video players perform normally on my computer with no errors or hangs.

Could it be firewall/networking issue? I.e MC cannot download codecs needed to show videos

I don't have this on a network. Intel says everything is up to date including their video functions. I tried disabling Norton and disconnecting from the net but the malfunctions were exactly the same so I don't think the antivirus is having any effect. If it did then why doesn't it affect other video players? As a general matter though, MC25 has been very stable on my system but MC28 less so although hangs and crashes were infrequent with 28. Don't have long term experience with MC31 but since it behaves the same as MC28 I am not hopeful.

For lepa: where could I go to download the latest codecs? I don't think there is any problem  in downloading MC codecs but what would I check in the JRiver folder?

I think then that my hunch is probably right. Every new MC version needs to download some video codecs/renderers etc when you play something first time. MC25 probably works as you have the codecs for MC25 already downloaded earlier. If you don't want to put this player machine to network then you could install same MC version to some other computer and then when it has downloaded necessary things you can copy those things from %AppData%\Roaming\J River\Media Center 31\Plugins to your htpc

EDIT: AFAIK there isn't downloadable plugins packages available but you need use MC to get those by activating the plugie i.e. playing something that needs it

What I meant is that it is not on a LAN of any kind but it is connected to the web. Are the codecs downloaded into the Roaming folders regularly?

If this is something that occurs automatically then I would like to check the relevant folder to make sure they are there. What are the folders and what am I looking for in them?

It should download everytime it notices something is missing when it is trying to use some particular plugin. You could check if you for example have lav64 folder in that appdata folder. But if your PC is connected to web and MC can connect to it then probably that's not the issue.

I looked in Roaming. I have MC25 28 and 31 folders. The MC25 and 31 folders have files from July 2023. MC 28 has files from November 2022.

Lepa's probably on the right track here, if a firewall or something else is blocking MC from downloading plugins (e.g. LAV filters, madVR, etc.) it can certainly cause this sort of issue.

I suppose there's also a chance that an Intel Haswell iGPU might not be good enough anymore for MC. I seem to recall somebody saying that Intel dropped some sort of support for Haswell (and potentially other iGPUs) with Windows 10 in their drivers. Maybe it was a level of OpenGL support? I do know that newer versions of MC use ANGLE while older ones used Direct3D, if memory serves correctly. The ANGLE-based backend will depend on OpenGL ES and will require an minimum OpenGL support level, can't recall if it's 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, etc. If the plugins are downloaded for MC31 and it still doesn't work, I suppose it could be that. Or it could be a corrupted plugin download, which then you can first backing up the folders to the desktop with MC fully closed, then reopen MC and try playing a video file again and see if MC downloads the plugins needed and then hopefully it plays fine.

Just throwing some stuff out there, hopefully it's something simple like a firewall blocking it or corrupted plugin download or something like that. Good luck though regardless.

:-*Yeah - check to see if you have files within these directories (MC downloads them as needed), eg you will not have the libbluray64 unless you try to play a bluray, or libplacebo64 unless you try to use JRVR.

I have about six different dll files in the plugins folders. I also have a file from Intel named   l IntelQuickSyncDecoder.

I disabled this Intel file and tried the Media Editor again but the result was the same : error in opening the file.

Have you tried using JRVR for video rendering?

Tools > Options > Video > General Video Settings > Video Renderer > (select JRVR here)

Was that path in in MC25 because I don't see it? Or in later versions? In order to get any Video playback i had to uninstall 28/31 and go back to 25. I could try reinstalling the version that has he rendering.

Google says that JRVR was introduced in MC28.  I didn't think it had been that long, but I guess it has!

I reloaded MC31 but the only thing I see in the Video options for JRVR is Allow HW decorder direct rendering on mismatched sizes.

That must be it because VOILA there is Video playback in MC31. Brian you are in genius territory. This should be a sticky.

The only fly in the milk is that the Media Editor is still showing an error message trying to open  video files that have been ripped within JRiver

I never knew MC had a "Media Editor". The WIKI could be wrong (outdated), but it says "Media Editor cannot be used to edit videos, DVD, TV......"

Media Editor is under Advanced Tools but maybe the joke is on me. I thought you could do simple video editing like cutting the way Audio files could be. But apparently not. The error message is too vague IMO. It should say video formats not supported or something like that. Instead it goes to a great show of decoding the file for a minute and then pops up and says: error can't open file. But if the "Media Editor" is limited to audio then it should say Audio Editor instead.

I imagine there are dozens of different simple video editors for Windows.  I don't have any real information on what might be the best one.

But I've been using a cross platform simple video editor for years called AviDemux.  It's able to read many formats of video and audio.  It writes a pretty good variety of formats also.

If you are simply cutting on key frames, it's very easy to use and rather fast to save your new "cut" file.  I just tried it on an MKV and an MP4.  Both saved a trimmed clip very quickly.

If you want to change audio or video codecs it takes quite a bit longer.  But it works well for those types of tasks as well.  It runs on Windows, but I've never run it on that platform.  It's free so it might be worth a look for simple tasks.
