JRiver Media Center 30 v96 has stopped functioning
« on: July 11, 2023, 06:51:24 am »

This is an issue I have experienced many times in the more than ten years since I began using JRiver somewhere around v.16, namely that it played last night but will not today.  It is installed on a Windows 10 computer connected via HDMI to a Trinnov Altitude 16 surround processor, audio only. Media Center is set to source number of channels and configured with direct sound using "player." My music collection contains both two- and multi-channel recordings, and I do not want to have to change any settings in Media Center to switch between the two.

I can see the music playing on JRemote and the Windows app, but there is only the very, very faintest sound coming from the speakers.  I sometimes get weird messages in Media Center to the effect that it cannot play a given track because the sampling and bit rates will not work and suggesting I allow Media Center to change to different values, but the sampling and bit rates claims do not reflect the sampling and bit rate of the recording.  I have tried various settings, but the behavior does not change.  By the way, all other sources connected to the Trinnov work just fine, although no other is a Windows connection.

This is an old and too often recurring problem I would like to leave behind once and for all.  I need help, but please, I am not fluent in techno-speak.

I did not put "Mac" into the heading of the previous post.  Why it appears there I have no idea.  I am strictly a Windows user.

You posted on a Mac board.  I'll move it to the Windows board.

Your problem probably has to do with the HDMI connection getting dropped.  Power cycling the receiver may help.  Try a Google search to learn more.  There are devices you can purchase to help.

Have you tried a different HDMI cable?

Yes, but the issue is not connectivity.  I can see and control Media Center.  It's just that there is no sound coming out.  There has got to be one or more settings that need to be changed, but I'm out of answers.

Will someone from JRiver PLEASE respond to my problem.  No one has in seventeen days.  JRiver is just wasting space on my computer at this point.

Did you try a Google search for similar problems?

Take a look at the Wiki topic on audio set up.

Try swapping equipment.
And outputs.

I've swapped and researched everything.  I can SEE JRiver working as expected on the monitor, but there is no sound.  What has changed I do not know.  By the way, I downloaded a trial of Roon onto the same computer, and it plays just fine - after a few days of head-scratching set up.  There is a setting in JRiver that has been botched, but I do not see it nor has any setting change I've tried been successful.  It sure would be great it JRiver would log into my system remotely and look for themselves.

Try picking different outputs in Options > Audio > Audio Device.  You need to find a working device.  If Windows can play sound, the default Direct Sound device should work.

I have practically lived in Options > Audio > Audio Device in the past several weeks and have tried them all with zero success.

Did you try Direct Sound in Audio Settings?  Strip out any complexity and start with as simple a setup as possible.  Change the volume settings.  Make sure volume is not zero.  Check the Windows Mixer settings.

Remove the Trinnov and use something else.  Use a different input on it.   Connect to it with a different computer.  That would help you identify whether the problem is on the PC or the device.

I tried the Direct setting, and surprisingly it worked - sort of.  (That only served to frustrate me even more because I had tried Direct several times without success in the past weeks.)  However, I immediately noticed that the volume level was far lower than anticipated, in part because I was only getting two-channel playback.  Those brass choirs in the Berlioz Requiem were solidly in the front of the room where they do not belong.  See the image Audio setup reduced.jpg attached here for the settings used.

I then tried a variety of the WASPI inputs (none of which had worked in previous weeks), including one specific to the Trinnov Altitude, but today they were functioning.  Kind of.  The volume level considerably higher than with Direct, and multi-channel was playing.  Berlioz's brass choirs were now behind me where they are placed in the recording.  Had I solved the problem?  No such luck.

The multi-channel recording that played successfully is in 5.1 .dsf format, but when I tried playing a 5.0 .wav format file, I got the error message you see in the attached Playback error reduced.jpg.  I can assure you that my system is capable of all variety of multi-channel playback formats, and I have played that specific 5.0 .wav recording many, many times without adjusting anything in Media Center.

BTW, I use zones: a two-channel zone (=2 channels) and a multi-channel zone (>2 channels) that had been working without manual intervention for several years previous.

What other setting can I show you that might lead to a solution?

Try playing ordinary FLAC files to see what you learn.

The problem may only be with high res or multi-channel.  That would suggest that either you're using the wrong input on the Trinnov device or it doesn't reliably support what you think it does.  MC can convert if necessary, using DSP Studio > Output settings.

Power cycle the output device if it doesn't work the first time.

But start with FLAC and see what you learn.

Please re-read my previous message.

I have power cycled the computer containing JRiver dozens of times and did so again at your request today, even rebooting the computer.  Nothing changed.  Direct setting will play multi-channel .flac and .wav files but only in two-channel at a much lower volume level than Waspi and with a sound quality that suggests something is amiss. Waspi will play multi-channel files at the proper volume in .dsf format and sounds good but will not play either .flac or .wav multi-channel files as depicted in one of the photographs I attached in the previous message.  Waspi does play two-channel high-res .wav.  A few weeks ago, all these file formats were playing properly.

Did you see any issues with my Media Center settings in the photographs I attached in the previous message?  Can I provide other examples?

Power cycle the output device.

Please make a list of what does work and another of what doesn't.

I have power cycled my entire system to no avail.

Working via WASPI

1. Two-channel .wav and .flac
2. Multi-channel .dsf
3. Volume level is as expected

Not working via WASPI
1. Any .flac or .wav multi-channel file.  The error message in the photograph I provided appears, claiming that Media Center cannot recognize the format.

Working via DIRECT
1. Any .flac, .wav, or .dsf file plays but outputs only two channels
2. Volume is approximately 15 db lower than WASPI
3. The sound is not outstanding

JRiver recognizes an Altitude WASPI connection that would seem the logical choice, but all WASPI selections behave in the same manner.

Pick the speaker configuration of your system in DSP Studio > Output Format.  This way all the mixing of multi-channel and two channel material will use the same output format.  This is the recommended approach.  I really appreciate JRSS, but you can choose no mixing if you prefer.

I don't want JRiver to output two-channel as multi-channel.  That is the Trinnov's job.  I want the channels in the recording to be output without alteration.

Well 5 channel isn't normally supported.  If you only want some content to use JRSS, you could try Zone Switch.

Many classical recordings long ago gave up using the .1 sub-woofer channel. As I stated previously, I have used zone switch for some years, and those 5.0 files have been playing on JRiver via the Trinnov until just recently.  What has changed?  Is there a setting I'm missing?

Well do they play as 5.1?  If so, that's the issue.  Why the change I don't know.

I don't use a sub-woofer.  I don't need one.  The .1 channel is stil in the source, but the Trinnov knows to send the low bass to the front speakers.

You posted a screenshot showing 5.0 playback failing.  That means it needs to be converted.  You can choose no upmixing or downmixing if you prefer, but the channel count is not supported by your hardware.

That may be what the message means, but I have been playing 5.0 and 4.0 recordings via the Trinnov Altitude since I bought it four years ago until, it seems, I installed JRiver version 30.  Is there for JRiver to dummy a .1 signal containing no musical information?

Pick 5.1 as the output format with no upmixing or downmixing.

This does not work.  I still cannot play anything either without having JRiver dumb down the file characteristics or make manual setting changes, something I have never had to do in the four years I have been using JRiver connected to the Trinnov Altitude 16.  Settings that worked last night will not work the next day, which makes no sense.  I tried downloading v.31, but that has the same issues as v.30.

The device - the Trinnov Altitude 16 - is working perfectly and has worked with JRiver for four years until recently.  Neither do I have another device to try.  This problem must lie in JRiver because there is no other logical explanation.

It doesn't seem to be working perfectly now.  Could be a settings problem.

There are no settings of the nature you imply in the Trinnov.  It plays 5.1, 5.0., 4.0, 3.0, and 2.0 CDs without issue, not to mention every film audio.
