What is MC tagging?

Abbra Cadabra:
Traveling with my laptop and a portable USB drive full of mp3 files.
Without the USB drive attached, I open MC30 and begin to stream Radio Paradise.

MC throws an error window stating that tagging updates failed on um-teen files.

What is MC tagging and WHY?
I have Auto-Import disabled, so it should be doing nothing with my library if the files are not being used.
I have the option checked for "Protect files on missing drives" so it should not attempt any tagging without the drive present.

Any settings I may have missed?
