MC was opening yesterday but wont open now [Solved]

howdy, my mc seems to be crashing on launch. I am attaching my log files.
if anyone could help i would appreciate it.

There's nothing obvious there.
Maybe run it as the user from a terminal if you are not already? You might get some info on standard output.
Did you recently update?

not that  i know of on the updates. so how do i start mc from the terminal ? I have been just clicking on an icon to start it. I am not sure where to find the main exe , is it jrmc.exe ?

Open a terminal and type in mediacenter31 and press enter. That should do it.

.exe files are Windows executables, and are not how apps run in Linux (well, not without Wine/Proton, but you don't have to worry about that one here).

If it indicates an issue like a segmentation fault (aka segfault) probably going to need more info, e.g. your distro you're using, etc.

ok, So I typed in mediacenter31 in my terminal and the result is "Segmentation fault (core dumped)" my distro is pop os (I am useing it because it is the only distro that is working with my external monitor i have tryed arch,kde neon,kde manjaro none of them would work with my setup)

It's odd that it was working before but not any longer. Did you update or remove any packages in the interim? Before I fire up a VM for testing could you try temporarily moving your MC library and then relaunching mediacenter31?

ok did the backup and restarted MC it comes up asks for my licence again and seems to be like a fresh install.
I ziped up my backup of MC 31 folder and tryed to attach it to this post but I guess it's 2 big or somthing (157 megabytes)

mc fails to start again, renaming my mc 31 folder and re trying mc 31 I get the attached screen shot. it starts out as a solid white box and as my mouse cursor passed over it the buttons show up.

Looks like a window manager issue of some kind.
Make sure you aren't using the noveau X server. That's very buggy.

Thanks for the clarification.
We really don't have a way to make XWayland behave, we aren't using any of that API. It's all low level XWindows.
That said, I'm sure I have run successfully under it on one platform or another.

Nothing special in the logs.
There is no way for us to make wayland behave.
You need to either run a non-wayland X server or find tweaks for it that make it work properly with MC.

I don't think pop is useing wayland. am not 100% sure.  My about screen says X11.

It's probably a mutter issue then, being the common denominator. I don't have any crashes or segfaults because of the window drawing issues so those problems are likely unrelated. Segfaults and crashes are usually tied to the import of specific files.

I am going to wipe out my mc 31 folder again. I am going to not import anything. I will change the skin to thunderstorm and Increase the size to 125% I will not be playing any media of any kind. I will randomly start the program over the next few day's and see what happens.
is there a way to backup just my custom fields and expressions?

Well that was quick, wiped my mc 31 folder and stoped auto inport made sure there would be no inporting in the background. put my licence in. changed skin and text size closed the program forgot to enable logging  tryed to run it again and won't come up.

You are running 24/32 bit color right? MC will not work with a 16 bit color palette.

I am not sure how to check this, I am assuming that i am using a 24/32bit color mode. The web and games all seem to look normal.

Also MC should NEVER be run as root or under sudo. If you've done that it can mess up the permissions  on the files/directories that MC stores under the users home directory.

Ok so deleted my .jriver/mc31 folder again, remembered to enable debugging, prevented importing, and changed the size to 125% I did not change the skin.

I have so far been able to close mc and start it again several times. going to change the skin and see what happens.

Well modern cards dark seems to work, I have closed down MC and restarted it 12 times.

So thunderstorm seems to be the problem. changing the skin to thunderstorm and closing MC, MC will no longer start.

I been testing all the other theme's and they don't cause the crash on launch. it strikes me as a little bizarre that this one skin causes these crashes on launch.

That is a bit strange, yeah. Thunderstorm is the only one? Hmmm.

The thing that stands out to me with Thunderstorm's main.xml is that at the bottom scaling is enabled, even though the skin doesn't have any 2x images or anything like that. Wonder if it'd stop doing it if that was removed?

If you want to try an experiment, you can try opening Thunderstorm's main.xml in a text editor and scroll down to the bottom and either comment out this part using #s or just remove this part...

This will disable scaling for the skin, but seeing it doesn't have any 2x images that *may* be the cause here.

P.S. There's two more oddities I see here with Thunderstorm's main.xml is 1) the extra space between </TAGWINDOW> and <SCALE> and 2) the presence of an extra preceding spaces before </SCALE>, which likely won't matter on Windows, but *could* on Linux or Mac. That's something else you can try too, removing that extra preceding space. There's actually a few more extra preceding spaces present in the bottom part of the main.xml file too (SPLITVIEWTAB and TAGWINDOW). Bob would have to comment if that could cause your issue.

Here's a modified Thunderstorm main.xml that I went through and removed the extra spaces and moved the scale part to the top like with other skins. Just override the existing Thunderstorm main.xml located in the hidden .jriver folder in your Home directory > Media Center 31 > Skins > Standard View > ThunderStorm. Hopefully it does the trick. :)

I have discovered that if I go and edit the User Settings.ini and change the skin line from Thunderstorm to one of the other skins mc will start. So at least I don't have to delete my mc 31 folder over and over.
Another odd thing about this is that when I switch to Thunderstorm there is no problem mc works and play's files no issues no lockups  and looks great on screen. only when you exit mc and try to start mc will it fail to start.

This issue can be marked solved as I have moved from pop os to Deb-12 where the issue is not a problem there.
