Problem with Name tag
« on: February 12, 2003, 09:30:26 am »

Hi,

I have many MP3s created a few years ago, all with ID3V1 tags.  In WinAmp, WMP9, and MusicMatch Jukebox, the name from the tag in the Name column appears correctly.

For instance, "Alive".

However, I just installed the 30-day trial of MediaCenter, and the names of many of my MP3s are taken from the filename.

It now says "Pearl Jam - Live in Atlanta - 16 - Alive"

That is the filename minus the extention.  I assume that it is having difficulty reading the tag and is therefore just figuring out the name based on the filename.  I have installed the default settings, and have not changed anything.  I can't seem to find the option to show what is really in the tag.

I can manually rename the Name tag, and it accepts the new one.  And when I scroll to the FORMAT option in MC, it clearly says :

ID3v1 Tag: (128 bytes)
  Name: Alive
  Artist: Pearl Jam
  Album: Live in Atlanta (4/3/94)
  Year:
  Comment:
  Track #: 16
  Genre: Grunge (6)

So why in the world is it putting in the whole filename (minus the extention) in the Name column?  I have some other MP3s which appear correctly, but I cannot see what is different.  They are also V1 tags.

For instance, this one :
ID3v1 Tag: (128 bytes)
  Name: Displacement
  Artist: Paul W
  Album: Kwake Studio Cuts
  Year:
  Comment:
  Track #: 1
  Genre: Other (12)

When I look in the main view, it correctly says Displacement as the name even though the filename is something different.

Lastly, for all the ones it is inventing a name based on the filename, it won't find them on YADB.  I get zero hits out of 25 lookups.

Any ideas?

there was a fix in 9.0.110 not sure if this would help.

but converting from wav to MP3 would suck the file name in as the song name when convert was done.

if you do not have 9.0.110 download that and try it.

should be in the first thread in this forum.

OK, tried it.  Unfortunately, I have the same problem.  Would it help if I posted the complete info from the Format Option?

If you could, would you send one of the files that MC goofs on to matt @ jriver.com

We'll try to get it fixed shortly after.

Thanks!

Just to let everyone know, you can fix this problem by selecting the incorrectly named MP3s, and right-click then choosing Tools - Update Library from Tag Always.

All of the names are now correct, however I still can't figure out why it occurs in the first place.  When I copy any directory of MP3s off off one of my CDs, I have to run that tool.

At any rate, it is pretty easy to correct.

yes but i don't think it should work that way.

the other thing is some fields saved to the file name may have the "-" in it and some fields may be filled in wrong like

Songname: A Girl Like You - Strip Club Version
Songname: Creep - Mtv Unplugged

etc....

when they are saved to the file name this kind of screws up things

It does this every time if you double click on a playlist to get MJ to play it.
It just lists the file names and selecting tools, update is needed to make it display the tags.

Otherwise every time without fail it will just say the filenames.

I have this problem too. One hypothesis is that it occurs when the directory path of the file being read exceeds a certain size.

For example, when I had the file:

F:\Storage_Dell4100\My Music\Classical\Steve\Done\Franz Schubert - Symphony No. 9 The Great & No. 8 Unfinished\Franz Schubert - 06. Symphony No. 8 Unfinsihed - II. Andante con moto.mp3

It placed the filename in the name field.

When I shortened it to:

F:\Storage_Dell4100\My Music\Classical\Steve\Done\Franz Schubert - Symphony No. 8,9\Franz Schubert - 06. II. Andante con moto.mp3

It properly put the title field from the tag in the name field.

I shortened the path and names of all the files that were causing problems and MC9 now reads all of them correctly.

Hi,

Thanks for the info, but the pathnames I am using are relatively short :

G:\My Music\MP3-16\Pearl Jam - Live in Atlanta\Pearl Jam - Live In Atlanta - 11 - Go.mp3

I think what you experienced was some sort of refresh when you renamed them.  If you select your MP3, then right-click Tools - Update Library (from Tags Always), in my case the name now appears correctly.  However, I have to do that for every MP3.  I can select them all at once, but I think I really screwed up the Library doing that because MC started to think it was an Excluded Directory and refused to add any additional MP3s.

I uninstalled, reinstalled, and still had the problem.  So I uninstalled, zapped all j.river reg entries, and all mediacenter directories not uninstalled, and reinstalled, and I am back where I started.  I can now import, but all the names are screwed up again.

Same thing here... Although I went through and renamed 700 files before finding out that I can use "update library from tag always" to repair it.

argh!

That's the nugget.

When we parse M3U's, we were saying: "hey, we'll use the same name that the M3U uses"  The problem is that's normally just the filename.

Anyway, look for a fix next build.

Thanks everyone.
