resource.xml customization best practices?

Years ago I added a few keyboard customizations to resource.xml and have not touched it since. My customized resource.xml is reused with each MC upgrade.

I assume from time to time JRiver must release a new version of resource.xml.

Are we supposed to re-enter our customizations into each new version of resource.xml?

How would we know if resource.xml has been updated?
