The license key... suggestion ...
« on: February 11, 2024, 07:07:23 pm »

I just upgraded MC (to 32.0.12) on my Linux Mint laptop.  It is a secondary-level PC for me in my MC world, so I am more aggressive with the updates to the current versions.

The update, as has been my experience with MC updates, went well.

Where I stumbled, however, occurred when I had to enter my license key.

The difference between 0 and O, and S and 5 threw a smooth upgrade process into a "what's happening here" process.

I do admit, I was a victim of the default fonts on this PC, fonts that failed to distinguish the differences between similar characters.

Maybe MC can avoid the O, 0, S and 5 characters in its key in the future?

thx.

A follow-up....

I just updated to 32.0.17 here on my Linux Mint laptop.

No issues with the update.  All progressed without issue.  No prompts as I had with the prior update.

thx.

I moved the laptop from Linux Mint over to MX Linux (Xfce).

I just finished an install of MC.

The install went well, though I was caught (again) with the "O" vs "0" thing.  For some reason, copy 'n' pasting into the license key field did not work, I had to type the license key.  One-character-at-a-time.  :)

So far, in my limited use, MC looks to be working quite well on MX Linux.

Thanks!

I get the 0 vs O issue however when you copy paste there should be no issue. Make sure there are no leading or trailing spaces in your copy/paste.

I found that if I just highlight the license number in the email, Media Center automatically puts it in the text entry field. I don't even have to copy/paste.

Yeah, that is the behavior I had seen previously.  But the "highlight and magical paste" didn't seem to occur.  So then I tried the Ctrl-v thing to paste it into the field.  And that didn't work either.

Looking back, it may be an issue with the Linux distribution i had been using.

Yeah, that's an issue with Linux of late, so many distributions, so little time or resources.

In some respects, Linux may be it's own worse enemy with all those various distributions.

OK, probably more than you wanted to see...  :)

Long story short, once I got past that install quirk, MC is running quite well for my needs on this MX Linux laptop.

Though, I still stand by my O vs 0, 5 vs S and 1 vs l comment.
