I've been learning how to use MC9 rather than MMJB mainly because of faster sync with iPOD.
But the control over tagging seems very difficult to me.  
Is there a way to
1. preview what the new tag will be before it is applied,
2. control how you want you're filename to be made, (I use Artist_track #_track name_album)

in short the one thing that MMJB seems superior to MC in is it's tagging ability, it's so easy, and it's the only reason I still have MMJB on my computer

You preview the tag by just changing the tag.
If you dont like how it then looks, you use the 'Undo' feature in the tools menu to then go back to the previous tag.

It's the ultimate preview because you get to actually see the file.


As for renaming - you can do that too.
Go to tools - Rename files from properties.

In the box that then opens you can specify your own naming format although it is currently impossible to save this format.
To do so you enter the name of the field you want to use in square brackets.

eg:  [artist]_[track #]_[name]_[album]

Whatever info you have entered in the General fields of the File Properties will be the info that is in the tag.  If you don't want to apply the new tags, click the Commands button at the bottom of the File Properties window and choose Discard Changes. Clicking the X in the upper right of the File Properties to close the window will apply whatever changes you've made to the tags.

2. control how you want you're filename to be made

There are a couple of different places to specify the filename, depending on what operation you're performing at the time. If you're ripping new CDs, you can set the filename by going to Tools/Options/File Naming and Location.  If you want to rename files based on the info you have entered in the tag, right-click on the file(s) and choose Tools/Rename Files From Properties.  You can also do this using the Tools button at the bottom of the File Properties window.

I've been using Dr. Tag for most of my tagging needs, mainly because it does something I haven't found in other tagging tools.

Namely, when renaming (either individual files or en masse), if a value is empty, Dr. Tag will skip that portion of the name template and the delimiter that follows it (it will also let me specify the padding for track numbers).

Name Template:

[artist]_[track #]_[name]_[album][/quote][/list]

Songs:

• Artist: Jo Jo  Album: First  Track #1  Name: Temp
  
• Artist: Jo Jo  Album:<blank>  Track #<blank>  Name: Second

Correct New FileName (via Dr. Tag):

• Jo Jo_01_Temp_First.mp3
  
• Jo Jo_Second.mp3

WRONG New FileName (via most other tools):

• Jo Jo_01_Temp_First.mp3
  
• Jo Jo___Second.mp3

Since I haven't used MC9 for filename renaming, can someone let me know whether it does it the correct or wrong way?
