Windows on ARM Support
« on: June 01, 2024, 01:59:50 pm »

Just inquiring.

There should be many benefits to the platform in the audio realm.  Will be developing using the ARM chips and am awaiting a unit.

Any chance of direct support?

Thanks

I am also interested by this question.
I intend to buy the new microsoft arm base surface 11. Will JRiver work through emulation ?

Windows on Arm, probably not.

I would imagine it'd work through Windows' x86 emulation though things like drivers (e.g. the WDM driver) may not work.

Yep. The driver for WDM may be problematic. In theory most things should be okay. Apple's system for this has been in the wild for a while now without many problems, and as a side note MS actually made huge strides in the real time translation space ages ago for the 360, their implementation of x86 to PPC for original Xbox backwards compatibility is frankly really smart.

Windows on ARM is cool, I'm glad something is finally coming to fruition. ARM isn't my bag but some of these new chips are really stellar.

I don't think you'll get an ARM native build though but realistically none of that should matter if it's compatible. The overhead, in other implementations of x86 to ARM have not been horrifying.

I've been fitting editors with the Apple M processors for a while, unless they need a workstation at their desk or have absurd requirements, that's my go to now. They have been basically complaint free on my end.  Stellar performance if your main use case is editing. I'm not supporting the OS / software side really (not a mac chick anymore), these guys figure it out just fine.

"Any chance of direct support?"

"Windows on Arm, probably not"

"Not likely to run JRiver Media Center."

"Windows on ARM runs most apps, not just those optimized for ARM.
However, it appears that a few apps will not run."

"Eventually there will be JRiver customers that actually can test the situation and report back.   Until then we are just waving our arms hoping that it means something."

"[Who's] gonna pull the trigger?"

I take it that all of this means that MC has no plans for adopting to run under ARM natively and has no definitive plan for thorough testing in emulation mode.  Please correct me if I am mistaken.

It's almost a month later and general experiences with the new laptops are being reported.  AI aside, they seem to be lighter, smaller, do not heat up as much, are therefore not as noisy, run longer on their batteries and are performing well vs. the last generation of intel chips.  In other words they are giving laptop owners more of what laptops are supposed to provide.

I upgraded from MC 23 to MC 32 recently with a view to upgrading my laptop as well.  But for MC I would be looking at one of the ARM  models.  But I am stuck.  Could be that older laptops will be heavily discounted and I should go that way.

But what is the future for laptops and can anyone answer specifically for MC?  I do appreciate this dialog.

I would be surprised if MC32 itself didn't run fine through the x86 emulation included in Windows 11 on those Snapdragon ARM laptops. The only caveat may be driver related things not working like the WDM driver. Somebody would have to bite the bullet and try running MC32 on it and see what works and what doesn't work. Performance wise it'd run a little slower than running it natively on x86 hardware but if all you're doing is listening to audio for example, you may not notice anything.
