Improve Grouping on views

Hello

Currently we can do  grouping of field in bien  by a grouping size of 1 to N letters, ( A, A-B ,A-D).
Current in my database that contains thousands of entry  I group actors this way for letter J I have 1500 entries
Is there a wat to extent  grouping to a number of letter deep (AA or AAA) rather than to a range of letter (A-C)
 
also to improve listing categories in views is there a way to separate Firstname  and last Name
