MC32/MC33 AppImage
« on: August 30, 2024, 08:03:50 am »

I came back to playing around with making an AppImage of MC32 after playing around with it about a year ago, and I did succeed. An AppImage is a bit like a docker image, but for GUI applications. It can bring along any static dependencies it wants (such as those from Debian Bullseye), and running it is as simple as making the binary executable and running. Custom home and config directories can even be set-up to make an application truly portable.

Anyways, this was just a fun thing to try to get working, I'm not sure how much further I'll take it (as I rely on the excellent docker image for using MC as a server), but I figure I would throw it into the aether. An AppImage of MC32 was successfully produced on Github - https://github.com/davidvedvick/mediacenter.appimage/actions/runs/10633047150. The repository also has a definition that builds MC33 as well.

This is very interesting indeed. Would love to hear Bob's take on this and if there's limitations to using an MC32/MC33 AppImage.

As far as I understand with regards to how that works, the only places I'd think that there could be issues are in regards to the video interface to OpenGL and hardware acceleration. I think the audio device stuff should work ok. This is pretty similar to docker limitations.
