; delimiter use with display
« on: September 15, 2024, 04:03:39 pm »

It's been almost a decade since I first tried to get the developers to implement a way to display FIRST NAME LAST NAME but sort by last name using the ; delimited that allows for multiple artists assigned to one album. I have sort of learned to live with it.

As I clean up my music collection, though, I long to have the clean look that should be possible with such a complex program. Unless someone shows me a way, I'm just going to duplicate or triplicate albums with multiple artists. Or has something been changed in the last 9 years to make this possible?

Separate field for sorting by?
Essentially just create a surname field.

That's how I do it, although not for surnames.

You can create Views that group files by Name but sort by Surname, or vice-versa. However for a given Display column such as Artist, it's AFAIK not possible to display it in one way while sorting by the other.

You can however create a Calculated field with an Expression to sort by any order you wish. You could then show this new column instead of the original one, or show both of them simultaneously and use the new one to sort the view/playlist. Check the attached screenshot for expression examples.

Thanks, that’s what I’ve been doing, and it works fine in Standard View, but not in Theater View. Is there a workaround?

Nope. Doesn’t work with the ; delimiter.
