MC unable to change sample rates on output device reliably

usually I just tell MC to resample to 48kHz so as to avoid needing to disturb audio device (which, in the past, has resulted in some pops so I just got used to leaving it to resample)

during recent testing I stopped resampling and notice that MC cannot drive the audio device to change reliably *and* start playback in one operation

i.e.

audio device is at some sample rate
press play for something that is at a diff sample rate
audio device changes to the target sample rate + MC reports "playback cannot be started"
press play again, playback starts normally

this feels like a timing issue, e.g. MC doesn't retry and/or wait long enough for the sample rate to change

is there any setting in MC to influence this?

it's an ASIO output device if it matters
