Volume corrections based on R128 peaks
« on: October 26, 2024, 05:41:05 am »

Hello, I would like to ask three questions:

1) As far as I understand, if results from the ''Analyze Audio'' option show that some tracks have the R128 Peak Level above 0 dBTP (positive value), then the digital volume for those tracks should be reduced at least by that value to avoid digital clipping. For instance, if some track has R128 Peak Level of +1.5 dBTP, then the volume should be set to at least -1.5 dB so to keep the peaks up to 0 dBTP. Even better, I guess for some safety margin it should be reduced even more (like -2.5 dB). Is my understanding correct? If yes, then is there a way to do such volume correction automatically for each album based on R128 Peak Level results from the ''Analyze Audio''?

2) What is the ''Clip protection'' option under the ''DSP and output format'' (within DSP studio)? Is it working all the time even when all the DSPs are turned off, or is it activated only when some DSPs are selected? How exactly it works - does it reduce volume based on R128 peak levels or something else...?

3) Since I am using Lynx E44 sound card as a DAC, what would be the benefit of selecting the option: ''Device uses only most significant 24-bits (Lynx, etc.)''? I would like to have the best sound quality of course  ;D

Thanks!

1) would involve using https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Adaptive_Volume
2) is described in https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Overflow_Handling but it will always be active though can't see how it will breach without dsp that boosts
3) is a function of how the driver is implemented , it is described in https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=83514.0

Thanks!
In regards to ''Clip protection'' I thought it maybe deals with the intersample peaks because DSP activation is not needed for intersample overs to appear.
So, if ''Clip protection'' is always active, even without any DSP activated from the list, then I am wondering how it works?

I haven't tested that but I would think "deal with" in that case means compress so that wouldn't be what you want
