When you encounter a problem with television playback in MC, the best place to start is to post a question on this board ("Television"). A developer, a user, or an administrator, who can answer your question will answer it. A developer may ask you to provide a log file. In such a case you can follow the instructions below to send the logs.
To send MC log files to JRiver developers for debugging purposes, follow these steps (except for some television specific stuff, this instruction also applies to all areas of MC):
1.
Make sure logging is turned on.
Go to Help > Logging..., and make sure "Output to a log file" check box is checked. If you use Media Center 16 or earlier, also make sure at least "TV" and "Playback" are checked under "Types of events to log". By default all types are logged. You can leave all of them checked.
2. Restart (recommended) MC or click "Reset Log".
3.
Run any television tasks (such as scanning for channels, playing a channel, recording a channel, etc.) that you want logged.
4.
Grab the log files: - If you use MC17 or later versions:
When an error occurs and MC does not crash, go straight to Help > Logging..., and click "Report Problem...". If an error causes MC to crash, restart MC and go immediately to Help > Logging... and click "Report Problem...". MC packages log files and, if MC crashed, crash report into a zip file. Attach the zip file to an email and send it to a developer.
- If you use MC16 or earlier:
When an error occurs and MC does not crash, go straight to Help > Logging..., and click "Click to email log files". If an error causes MC to crash, restart MC and go immediately to Help > Logging... and click "Click to email log files". This will start your email program and puts two files - Log.txt and Previous Log.txt - in a zipped attachment. Depending on whether MC has been restarted since step 3, the useful log info is either in Log.txt or Previous Log.txt. You should leave both files in the attachment, unless you know exactly which one contains useful info. Enter the developer's email address in the recipient address field (usually the developer will tell you his email address when he asks you to provide the logs).
If you do not have email program on the computer, you may need to manually copy the log files. The files are (the examples shown here are for Windows XP, with similar paths in Vista and later):
c:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\J River\Media Center 14\Log.txt
c:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\J River\Media Center 14\Previous Log.txt
5.
Additionally, go to Options > Television, and choose "Copy television related filter info to clipboard" in Advanced section, near the bottom of the top-right pane. Paste this info to the email body, or paste it in the thread where you have reported the problem on this board.
