JRVR "Screen is in HDR mode" detection not working correctly
« on: November 22, 2024, 10:11:25 am »

Hi, I've been using JRVR for months now and have it set to switch my TV to HDR mode when I play a movie with HDR, worked flawlessly same as with RedOctober madVR before.
I can't pinpoint exactly when (I don't watch HDR movies or shows that often) but this stopped working, when I start a video with HDR the screen does not get switched to HDR mode. After a bit of searching I found that for some reason, JRVR always registers the TV to be in HDR mode and therefore doesn't switch the TV to HDR.
RedOctober madVR works completely fine and switches correctly to HDR mode, this only happens with JRVR.
I tried rolling back nvidia drivers, using different TV Inputs, reinstalling MC, coincidentally I even got a new TV (from Sony LCD to LG OLED), nothing worked.
Now after a LOT of searching i found that this gets fixed if in the Nvidia control panel I set the output to 8bit color, then everything is back to normal, if I set it to 10 or 12 bit JRVR always thinks the display is in HDR.
I always had this set to 10bit before when it was still working, so this is something new.

Anyone got any idea if that is something I have to fix on my side or if it might be some weird bug in JRVR?

Did you upgrade to Windows 11 24H2 by any chance? I think there are some changes.

yes I did, pretty early on when it was released for the public.
Is that something JRVR might need to be updated for or an actual bug in windows 24H2?
I mean, I can go back to madVR but I've grown to like JRVR.

I'm told this is caused by the new option called "Automatically manage color for apps" under "System > Display > Color Management". You can try turning that off maybe.
I will be looking into better support for when this option is turned on within JRVR.

That fixed it, I didn't even know of this new "Feature".

Thank you for that, I don't think I'd have found that on my own  :)

Hi,

I had this happen to me at some time when I used displaycontrol to disable/enable screens in a multi TV setup (HDR won't work on duplicate screens sadly).
It's not JRVR's fault, it's Windows 24h2. Somehow one of the displays remained stuck; not in HDR mode, but in HDR for video playback.
The other screen, when HDR was off said hdr video playback capable : no. The "stuck" display said hdr video capable : yes while HDR was switched off.
This tricked JRVR to believe the screen is in HDR mode while it wasn't.
I don't remember what I did exactly to get it back to work, multiple switches with displaycontrol, until the windows control panel went back to normal for that screen, with hdr video capable = no.
At that time JRVR worked nicely again.
I guess I'll have to go back to displayfusion for display switching...

In an upcoming build of Media Center i've updated the way to both detect and switch to HDR mode for the new methods introduced in 24H2, so maybe give that a try and see if it behaves any better.
