Yup.

I remember picking up the phone and then being asked by the operator, "number please."

I would tell the operator the number I wanted to talk with, and I would be connected.

There was not even a dial on the phone that I could use to dial the number.  I had to talk with the operator.

Of course, as a kid, I used to pick up the phone and just talk with the operators. 

Oh, different times.
