Installing JRiver Media Center 33 on MacOS
« on: August 16, 2024, 11:07:46 am »

Download and Install
IMPORTANT NOTE: Because of REQUIRED Xcode changes, MC33 REQUIRES at least MacOS 10.13. It will NOT run on any older version of MacOS.

Please download the version that matches your license.  MC33 is on the Download Page.  Older versions are in the Old Versions topic on our wiki.

Double click on the .dmg file to unpack the disk image and show the install window.

Drag Media Center 33 to the Applications shortcut shown in the install window (see image at the bottom of this message).

Close the installer window and eject the Media Center 33 installer disk image (control-click or right click on the installer image and do eject).

Run Media Center 33 from the Applications folder (from the finder menu, Go->Applications and double click on Media Center 33).

If you are asked for accessibility permissions you must accept that (it's how MC deals with retina displays).
If you are asked for screen recording permissions, you need to accept that for MC's user interface to operate properly, MC uses that permission to copy from part of it's window to another part of it's window. It's not used for anything else.
If you are asked for permission for input monitoring (capturing keys) you must accept that if you want the media keys on your keyboard to work in MC, it's not used for anything else.
When the system asks for permissions for MC to do disk access (Music, Pictures, Movies, Removable drives, etc) you must accept those to be able to access your media or CD/DVD drives or mounted NAS filesystems, or external drives)

Once MC is running you can control-click or right click on the Media Center 33 icon on the Dock, choose "Options" and select "Keep in Dock".

Converting Data from a previous version
A new feature of Media Center 33 is that the most recent library from a previous major version will automatically be loaded and restored into Media Center 33 the first time it is run. This includes any user installed Skins and Trackinfos.

Apple Support for Installing Applications

If you're upgrading, you can leave your older version installed until you're happy with the new one, and then uninstall the old version.

Licensing
The easiest way to enter your license without removing old versions of MC is to copy and paste it from your registration email into MC either at the startup splash screen if asked for it there or via Help->Registration Info when in the program. Using the .mjr with an old version installed may try to run the registration from the old version which is why we recommend the copy and paste method here.

I'm always a bit slow, but don't see the MC33 download on the download page.

It won't be there for a week or so. I'll post a build here shortly

My Macbook is running OS 10.12.6. I've been using Media Center 30 on it without any issue since it came out. I purchased Media Center 33 under the assumption it would work just fine as it always has.

If Media Center 30 has worked OK, is it worth giving Media Center 33 a shot, or am I just out of luck here?

Can you update the O.S.?  This is a problem caused by Apple's weak backward compatibility.

Unfortunately OS 13 (High Sierra) pushes the computer a bit too hard. (I've tried in the past, and "downshifted" back to Regular Sierra OS 10.12.6.).

If Media Center 30 has worked great, is it worth trying 33?

MC33 (like MC32) requires macOS 10.13 and newer because of Xcode requirements so unfortunately it won't work on your Mac running 10.12.

Unfortunately Jim's right, Apple is very bad at backwards compatibility and even worse with their forced/planned obsolescence of older hardware.

If I did try installing 33, what's the worst that could happen - the program just won't function? And is there even a *chance* that it would work?

10.12 doesn't even have useful root certificates (for browsers) any more.
If it's got intel video you can probably run open core legacy to get it to 10.13.

If things work well so far as you like, do **not touch anything and be happy !!! :)

Well, regardless, MC33 won't run on macOS 10.12. Unless the system can be upgraded to 10.13 or newer it's pointless to even try. Do note this isn't JRiver putting and enforcing some minimum version limitation or anything like that, it's because of Apple's Xcode requiring 10.13 and newer, which will eventually change too requiring newer versions of macOS.

Without noticing this restriction, I installed MC33 on one of my old Macs, a Mini running 12.7.5. And...it runs fine.

What would one expect to see fail? I've been using it for a few days now. No problems. (I can't update the OS due to the age of the Mini. It's running the latest it can.)

12.7 is fine, 10.13 is substantially older (not to be confused with macOS 13)
