Help with wireless streaming on a Windows 11 PC
« on: January 11, 2025, 09:03:23 am »

Hello,
I am using J River Media Center 21 and I am thinking of upgrading. It's a testament to the great engineers at J River that this old software is still working with Windows 11.

I have a HiFi music system with turntable, CD player and a ADC/DAC. I have an NAS drive on my home network with over 6,000 songs. Most of the music files are in FLAC format, digitized at 24/96K. I currently stream music wirelessly from the NAS drive using Media Center. I can also listen to internet radio stations with this setup.

However, my PC has to be in the same room as my music system because it is plugged into the ADC/DAC. I am looking to wirelessly stream music from my PC directly to the music system. Maybe a wireless DAC or something else. Most of the wireless DACs I have seen, are designed to stream music from music subscription services and several also want to do it using a cell phone. Since I already have music I don't want to use a subscription service. I want to use the PC with Media Center to stream music.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for your help.
Paul

I use a Wiim Pro to connect MC to a DAC in a different room. It has coax and optical output, but no usb. You can connect to it from MC via DLNA. The DLNA renderer looks like any other output device in MC.  You only need to use your phone for setup.  Optionally,  you can use your phone to stream from services like Tidal, Qobuz, etc. if you wish. It has an internal DAC, but by using coax or optical output it bypasses the internal DAC. The digital out is limited to 24/192 and it does not pass DSD. But for PCM at 24/192 or less it works fine.

The description emphasizes all it streaming cabablities, but it is a very good DLNA renderer also.

What kind of Amp / receiver do you have?  Many modern receivers that have network capabilities have DLNA built right into them.

I stream directly from JRiver to my Yamaha RX-A2A.  It is DSD Capable and sounds much better than going from HDMI to my HDMI input on my receiver.  (Video cards are quite limited when it comes to their audio capabilities.)

Car,
I have a NAD C356 in my music room, it is too old to have any wireless or digital connections.
I also have a Denon AVR-S950 amplifier connected to our TV Entertainment system. I can see the Denon from my PC and from within J River Media Center. In Fact, I tried connecting casting wirelessly to the Denon. It worked fine but I could not disconnect without turning everything off.

What I was looking for is a recommendation for something to add to my music system that J River can wirelessly connect to. I looked at some of the products from Cambridge audio, but they have their own app on a cell phone.

Thanks for your help
